Since our last coffee market update in April, we’ve seen big changes in both the Robusta and Arabica markets... Here’s what you need to know: ☕Robusta is continuing to hit highs we have never seen before. From June onwards, records have been broken again with last week (ending 12th July) seeing the market break through $4,650/tonne for the first time in its history! This is likely driven by the lack of Vietnamese Robusta available, with the new crop not shipping until Q3 this year. As a result, alternative origins are selling fast as the demand remains stable. ☕Over on the Arabica front, volatility in the market has remained high since April when trade reached 240clb ($5,290/tonne). While the market remained somewhat stable throughout May, the last six weeks have seen a series of steady increases. As of last week up to 12th July, we saw the market trade above 255clb its highest level since 2022, likely driven by the lack of Robusta. Want to learn more? Lincoln & York has been shortlisted for the The Food and Drink Federation’s Sustainable Packaging Initiative Award 2024! Reducing our non-recyclable plastic usage across 2,500 SKUs and 15 packing lines, without compromising on the quality or integrity of our products has been no mean feat. The team undertook a step-by-step decision-making process including extensive testing, which resulted in over 112 tonnes of non-recyclable plastic packaging being removed from the business over a 12-month period. It’s an achievement we’re really proud of and it’s great to see our work recognised through this shortlist. Nominations are now open for the European Coffee Awards 2024 - recognising the most influential brands in coffee! This year marks an important milestone for our business as we celebrate our 30th Anniversary - and here's just a few of the things we've been up to... • In 2023 we achieved the status of Carbon Neutral Roastery - 1 year ahead of our original target. • We hosted a special 30th Anniversary celebration at London Coffee Festival to thank our brilliant customers and suppliers from across the coffee and hospitality industry for their support over the past 30 years. • We launched a brand new website showcasing all of the great work that the team do every day to supply the best Private Label coffee to the UK and European markets. • We launched an impressive new interactive roastery experience - where you can immerse yourself in our world of coffee roasting, from sourcing to packing and everything in-between. • We're building a community reservoir in Burundi in partnership with our friends at Omwani and Migoti - and supporting the communities we source from. • We're continuing to invest in our state of the art facilities at the roastery with an additional £1m investment in a high speed packing line in the summer of 2024. The team enjoyed a fantastic couple of days at the Speciality Coffee Association’s World of Coffee! 🌍 Coffee Buyer, Chris Tough, Marketing Manager, Keely Wade and European Sales Executive, Ewelina Kowalczyk headed over to Copenhagen to meet customers, take in the latest trends and insights and of course, sample some of the best speciality coffee. We were delighted to participate in the second ESG lunch event for our region organised by EY, Barclays and AON last week. The focus was understanding how to obtain stakeholder buy-in for the sustainability agenda and we enjoyed hearing the different approaches of a wide range of organisations and sharing some of our perspective for the coffee industry. Working with One Carbon World, our roastery achieved carbon neutral status last year, and we continue to look for ways to reduce our impact further. Our latest data shows that the UK's love affair with coffee continues, with growth across all key consumption measures... ☕ Despite rising prices, the number of coffees sold is up 21.9% vs. two years ago. ☕ More people are buying coffee - with an additional 3.25 million coffee consumers vs. two years ago. ☕ In addition to more consumers buying more coffee, they are also buying more often - with purchase frequency up 7.5% over the same 2-year time period. ☕We’re also seeing growth in the appeal of whole bean coffee for in-home use, as consumers upgrade the way they enjoy their coffee at home, with this sector up 38% in value over the last 2 years.
