The ocean is home to creatures so strange they could be from another planet – goblin sharks, vampire squid, nudibranchs... Need we say more? 🐙✨
About us
The Lewis Pugh Foundation works for the preservation and conservation of our oceans for a peaceful and sustainable future. Change is driven by individuals, not by institutions. Which is why our Foundation is powered by inspired individuals and dedicated small teams. The Lewis Pugh Foundation convenes NGOs, governments, scientific institutions and concerned citizens around the world, uniting them around our common cause. And we get results. Our campaigns make a tangible difference. All of them are centred on our oceans. To date we have helped protect over 2,2 million km² of ocean, and we’re not stopping there. Life as we know it first began in the oceans, and all life fundamentally relies on them. But beyond what they can do for us, the oceans have their own intrinsic value. They have a right to be just as they have evolved over millennia: in perfect balance. As do all the creatures that live in them, from the tiniest krill to the most majestic whale. That's environmental justice.

If we want a habitable planet, we need to give our environment the acknowledgment and protection it deserves. Meet the Spanish lagoon that is now legally a 'person' 🏞️💚👇 🔸 In 2022, Mar Menor, Europe's largest saltwater lagoon, made history by becoming the continent's first ecosystem to be granted legal personhood. This groundbreaking decision, part of the global rights of nature movement, protects the 135km² lagoon from degradation 🇪🇸💧 🔸 The Mar Menor was under great stress due to severe pollution from agricultural runoff and urbanisation. This led to algal blooms and mass die-offs of marine life. In 2021, tons of dead fish washed ashore, highlighting the urgent need for intervention 🐟☠️ 🔸 As Europe’s largest saltwater lagoon it is a vital ecosystem for diverse wildlife including fish, seahorses and the endangered European eel. Separated from the Mediterranean by a 22km strip of land, it serves as a crucial refuge for seabirds and other species 🌊🐴 🔸 Legal personhood grants the Mar Menor the same rights as a person, allowing it to be defended in court. This shifts the perspective from exploiting the environment to recognising its value and establishing protection 🌍⚖️ 🔸 Teresa Vicente, a Professor at the University of Murcia, was behind the campaign to protect the lagoon. Over 3 years, she and her team mobilised locals and volunteers, gathering over 500,000 signatures to launch the legal initiative 👫📣 🔸 This year, Vicente was awarded the prestigious Goldman Environmental Prize for her efforts. The award recognises her role in securing legal personhood for the Mar Menor by rallying locals and volunteers to help save it from collapse 🏆👏 But the Mar Menor's story isn't just about one lagoon – it's a blueprint for environmental protection worldwide. Legal personhood for nature could be the key to preserving our planet's ecosystems. Which ecosystem do you want to see be granted legal personhood next? 💚👀 📸: 1. Copernicus; 2. Eva Manez/Reuters; 3.
