About us
The Barbour story began in 1894 in South Shields in the North East of England. Founder John Barbour began supplying oilskins and other garments to protect the growing community of sailors, fishermen and dockers. These first weather resistant items quickly established Barbour’s reputation for innovation and quality. Today, Barbour remains a fifth generation family business. Under the leadership of Chairman Dame Margaret Barbour, Barbour has grown into a lifestyle brand sold in over 55 countries worldwide including Europe, the US and Asia offering a wardrobe of stylish functional clothing, footwear and accessories inspired by the unique values of the British countryside. The iconic Barbour Bedale and Barbour Beaufort wax jackets continue to be made by hand in the factory in South Shields. Barbour International, the collection for men and women inspired by Barbour’s motorcycle heritage established in 1936, is now a separate stand alone brand with its own identity. In 2020, Barbour launched Wax for Life, an overarching name for all of Barbour’s wax services designed to encourage customers to extend the life of their wax garments. Wax for Life includes re-waxing and repairs (first introduced in 1921) and Barbour Re-Loved an upcycling circularity initiative. Each year over 70,000 wax garments are sent back to Barbour globally to be repaired, rewaxed or altered.

A massive thank you to Rebecca Reed FRSPH for delivering our most recent Mental Health Awareness Training, we are delighted to have 14 additional Mental Health Champions within the business who all successfully passed their training. Looking forward to continuing working with Siendo and getting more of our employees trained.
I have spent two lovely days with these wonderful humans and I'm proud to share that there are 14 more Mental Health Champions unleashed onto the streets of Barbour! Look at these faces and tell me these aren't the most kindest faces you've ever seen 😍 I cannot tell you how nourishing it is for my soul to be surrounded by so many people who have bucket loads of empathy and genuinely care about making the world a better place! It's absolutely the best part of my job! It's easy to watch the news and think everything is broken... but - in my world - I see the best of people. I see people who care. I see people who are committed to making a difference. I see lovely faces like these, who carve out time in their already busy diaries to learn about how they can better support their friends, families and colleagues! And that, my friends, is exactly what this world needs! Thank you to each and everyone of you for the loveliest few days together! Watch the love that went into creating our Barbour Re-loved jackets in partnership with Oxfam, ready for this year's Glastonbury. Each one is unique, repaired by our team in South Shields and embellished with up-cycled fabrics from previous Glastonbury festivals. Attendees will be available to rent the Barbour Re-loved jackets from Oxfam's festival stores on-site, whilst stocks last, with all proceeds going to Oxfam. They then have the option to return their wax jackets at the end of the Festival - or if they’ve fallen in love with their jacket, to purchase it.
