🌍 Reflections from AVCA Conference 2024 in Johannesburg 🇿🇦 I was blown away by the transformation in Johannesburg in the three decades since my first visit. This was most notable in Sandton, the district hosting the AVCA (African Private Capital Association) conference - a cornerstone event for the African private investment market. The area now boasts facilities competing with the world’s leading financial hubs. Development has progressed despite prevailing challenges including energy instability, high unemployment, tough local politics and insecurity. This is testament to the impact potential of industrialization in Africa. Such contrasts are commonplace in Emerging Markets (EM) and highlight the enormity of the potential impact of investment. As Western populations decline, EM are projected to grow by 2 billion - half of which will be in Africa. This offers unprecedented opportunities for economic and social development. It also means that success in achieving our global development goals hinges on significant expansion of private markets in Africa. The discussions at AVCA were insightful, both in terms of the significant opportunities presented, and the hurdles faced by General Partners (GPs) in exiting fund holdings, due to underdeveloped secondary markets. This substantiates the strategy of our upcoming GAIN EM Funds, with Debt and Equity offerings designed to tackle these systemic challenges, by focusing on secondary market investment opportunities. The spotlight is on EM private markets, which must continue to grow in size and significance. With our GAIN EM Funds, we are ready to catalyse this progress by offering institutional-scale, financial-first impact investments. A Decade Forward: Impact Investing's Progress and Future I’m just back from celebrating 10-years of growth of impact investing at Impact Summit Europe 2024, hosted by Phenix Capital Group at Amsterdam's historic Beurs van Berlage. The venue has a deep financial history, formerly hosting an innovative commodity exchange - symbolising the journey of impact investing from a niche strategy to a crucial asset class, generating financial returns, and helping address our global challenges. The Summit emphasized the important role of impact investment to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Themes such as climate transition, biodiversity, and gender equality were explored. The call is clear – we need unified action from all participants to help scale impact investment - with emphasis on the pivotal role of institutional capital - to help achieve a sustainable future for all. This objective aligns with everything we are doing at Impactable Investment Group, as we progress to launch the Global Asset Impact Network (GAIN) Investment Platform. Our Emerging Market Debt and Equity sub-funds are poised to offer institutional quality and scale, financial-first, impact investment opportunities. Thank you to Prosper Africa, Pensions for Purpose, Shell Foundation, and Pinsent Masons for such a productive Emerging Markets Roundtable. Leaders from UK Pension Funds and advisors showed keen interest in expanding into private market EM impact investments, recognizing the potential in these markets. DFIs also voiced their readiness to help catalyse larger-scale institutional investments in EM. Our discussions highlighted the key challenge: how to grow investable opportunities in impact funds for institutional investors. In response, Impactable Investment Group has joined forces with Phenix Capital Group to launch the GAIN Investment Platform and GAIN EM funds. Designed to bridge the gap between investors and impact investments, by offering scalable, financial-first impact investment opportunities, suitable for institutional investors. Our goal is to drive significant, positive change while delivering robust returns.
