About us

At Iceni Projects we believe that everything we do is ultimately about people – and as a consultancy operating within the built environment, for people read place. A place to live, to work, to play. To grow up; to grow old. A sense of place. Everything in its place. A time and a place. We are fortunate at Iceni to be able to call upon colleagues with a myriad of qualifications, specialisms and backgrounds, from archaeology to transport, operating across the country from four world class cities. However, what links us all is the belief that we can create better places by working collectively and collaboratively. So whether you choose to work with one individual or many, a planner or sustainability consultant, we put a commitment to place at the heart of what we do. We firmly believe in the principles of sustainable development. We practice what we preach. We are committed to reducing our environmental impact and enhancing our contribution to society through a series of relevant targets that are regularly reviewed, monitored and updated.

The new Chancellor has outlined significant housing and planning reforms in today's speech. Read more about the proposed changes, including restored mandatory housing targets and initiatives to unlock development.

    Director at Iceni Projects

Some highlights from the new Chancellor's speech this morning concerning housing. They will be detailing the planning reforms “shortly” and they will be consulting on "growth focussed" reforms to the NPPF before the end of the month, these changes will include the restoration of mandatory housing targets, so all eyes are on Angela Rayner. She did recommit to the 1.5 million homes target in this parliament (300,000 per annum) across all tenures and promised reforms to the PRS. Delivery will be ramped up over time, but they need the private sector to do this and they “are not in the business of building homes”. But it is “not a green light for any type of housing.” They are seeking to unlock development on brownfield land and in the “grey belt” but it will still be up to local authorities to decide where housing is delivered. They will be encouraging downsizing through increasing choice and supply including bungalows (which are land intensive) and in places near to their family (so anywhere). The Chancellor did not state that they would introduce specific targets for affordable housing but will leave that to colleagues in DHLUC. They will create a new task force to accelerate stalled housing sites including sites in Liverpool Central Dock, Worcester Parkway, Langley Sutton Coldfield and Northstowe (in Cambridge) which will deliver 14,000 homes. This would previously have been the remit of Homes England. They are also supporting LPA with 300 additional planning officers across the country. This is around 1 officer per local authority and in my opinion is unlikely to address the huge shortages these departments currently face. They are also looking for greater intervention from planning ministers if there is potential gain for the regional and national economy and she (Angela Rayner) has already called in two planning appeals for data centres in the home counties. Local mayors will also be asked to bring any "investment opportunities with important planning considerations" to the attention of both the Chancellor and the minister for DHLUC. This could be the death of localism. LPAs will also be reminded of their duty to get local plans in place and review their green belt to meet housing targets where required and deliver affordable homes.

Two days of guided tours of the unique Bromley-by-Bow Gasworks this week, marking 3 years of taking part in Newham’s borough-wide heritage festival.   Since 2022 the team have undertaken an extensive engagement programme, working closely with local historians, schools and artists, resulting in over 27 site visits including heritage and sketching tours, welcoming over 400 members of the public on site and engaging over 300 students from local schools.   Last week the site received Resolution to Grant Planning Permission and it’s been brilliant to work with so many local organisations, groups and residents, including local history tour guide David Charnick, local artist Lydia Thornley, staff and students at the Harris Academy and Newham College of Further Education, Newham Heritage Month and The House Mill.   www.bromley-by-bow.com    Berkeley Group Plc   #Bromleybybowgasworks #creativeengagement #consultation

Summer finally showed up on Friday, and we at Iceni made the most of it with our Summer Day Out! 🌞 We kicked things off with our usual State of the Nation presentation, catching up on what the Tribe has been up to and our plans for the future. The afternoon was a blast with dragon boat racing – shoutout to “Archies Angels” for their epic photo finish win! 🚣♂️ We also had a lovely visit to Mudchute Farm. The evening was all about BBQ, watching the Euros, and partying until late! 🎉⚽🍔

Home to seven Grade II Listed gasholders, Bromley-By-Bow Gasworks is one of the most fascinating and complex brownfield regeneration sites in the country.  On Wednesday, St William and RSHP’s plans to regenerate this 23-acre site were given the backing of Newham Council’s Strategic Development Committee, a fantastic milestone which follows three years of detailed design work and engagement with the local community. Dean Summers, Managing Director of St William, said: “I want to thank all our of partners and local residents who helped shape and supported these exciting proposals. “This fascinating brownfield site is home to the largest collection of surviving Victorian gasholders anywhere in the world. Our plan is to carefully restore and retain each of these vast decaying structures, and to transform the entire site into a welcoming mixed-use community, with over 70% of the land becoming public open space. “Designed in partnership with RSHP, this new neighbourhood will celebrate East London’s industrial history and bring new investment and other benefits to this part of Newham. There will be over 2,000 low carbon private and affordable homes, jobs, community space, shops, cafes, offices and a beautiful new park along the bank of the River Lea. And all of this will be sustainably located a short walk from Bromley by Bow and West Ham Stations.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/e-egDGNk #NewhamHeritageMonth #CommunityEngagement #CreativeEngagement #YouthEngagement #BrownfieldRegeneration #Planning Historic England London Borough of Newham Simon Lewis Dean Summers
