As part of our Specifying Engineer Recognition Program, we would like to congratulate our latest winners and highlight their contributions and expertise in projects from the last 12 months. We're committed to improving sustainability in the water industry, and we recognize that a huge part of that improvement comes from projects like the ones that these engineers have successfully delivered. To put it into context, the hydrodynamic separators that we installed in 2023 treated around 1.2M gallons of stormwater every minute and captured around 459,000 lbs of TSS (total suspended solids) - almost 203 tons of sediment. The engineers that we're recognizing today have contributed to this incredible impact and we look forward to working with them and other sustainability-focused engineers to take this even further. https://lnkd.in/e8Jg-ZgE

Combined Sewer Overflows (CSOs) act as a “safety valve” for our sewer networks, but weather conditions can present a pollution risk. Storm King® systems—like this one in Round Lake Beach, IL—use hydrodynamic separation to prevent trash and sediment from reaching the environment during heavy rainfall and surge events. The Hydro GritCleanse™ is an optimized fluidized bed grit washing and dewatering system for municipal wastewater treatment plants. The system outputs very clean and dry grit product which significantly reduces the amount of material to dispose of resulting in much lower landfill costs and fewer odor issues. Designed with the operator in mind, the Hydro GritCleanse™ fixes design flaws found in conventional fluidized bed technologies to ensure ease of maintenance, less downtime, and a longer product life. Watch this short animation to see how the Hydro GritCleanse™ can capture 95% of all grit 75 micron and larger with less than 5% volatile solids in the final product.

We’re disheartened to see the latest figures released today by the Environment Agency that reveal the scale and the severity of the water quality issues that we’re facing in the UK. It’s encouraging that water companies have taken action to address the situation (https://lnkd.in/gJnZyS-m), and we’re confident that the focus on combined sewer overflows (CSOs) in this plan will contribute to improving the discharge situation – our Storm King system successfully helped the town of Namur in Belgium achieve EU water quality targets (https://lnkd.in/g8JewMg3 - pictured) – but there is no single solution that will resolve the issue on its own. We firmly believe that a blend of solutions is what’s required. For example, sustainable drainage systems can reduce the pressure upstream of treatment facilities, CSO treatment will provide a critical pollution “safety net” at the last step, and a comprehensive monitoring, reporting and alerting system will give stakeholders the insight that they need to prevent spills or react swiftly in the worst-case scenario. Clean water is critical to public health, wellbeing and prosperity. We need to work together to achieve it.

Fantastic effort from our Clevedon UK office today - a team of volunteers went out into the community to clean up the local Land Yeo River in support of #WorldWaterDay. Their hard work has helped to prevent pollution from making its way into the local water environment, preserving water quality and keeping our rivers clean. Huge thanks to all who took part!

Great job by the volunteers from our Portland, ME office who took time out this #WorldWaterDay to visit a local elementary school to educate the children about the importance of clean water. The team taught the students about water pollution and water treatment, helped them run experiments to see how you can remove pollutants from water, and encouraged them to draw posters promoting clean water. Kudos to everyone involved for informing, motivating and inspiring our next generation of clean water custodians!
