Building a better world through entrepreneurship 🌎

About us

Hatch is a national charity that supports underrepresented entrepreneurs from across the UK to launch and grow businesses that are both sustainable and successful, and have a lasting impact on their communities. We’re committed to building a fairer society by helping develop entrepreneurs’ skills, knowledge, and confidence through our unique programmes designed by entrepreneurs for entrepreneurs, and our sustainable, compassionate financial support offering. We’re not typical of the third sector. Although we’re a charity, we think and act like a business. Since 2014, we’ve supported more than 7,800 UK entrepreneurs to flourish, building a vibrant network of partners, funders, and investors who share our vision in the process. In 2022-23, more than 8 in 10 (84%) founders on our longer-term support programmes were female or from a marginalised gender, with more than 6 in 10 (64%) coming from a minority ethnic group. Nearly one in five (18%) founders on the same programmes told us they were disabled or neurodiverse. Our founders also told us the areas of knowledge and expertise they felt had seen the biggest improvements before and after completing a Hatch programme: - Accessing the funding they needed saw an increase of 97% - Measuring and communicating the impact of their business or organisation saw increases of 79% and 69% respectively. - Setting their organisation’s mission and vision saw an increase of 49% We estimate that since starting 10 years ago, businesses founded by our graduates employ more than 2,500 people in the UK and have raised more than £20m in investment. We work closely with our partners and funders, including UBS, J.P. Morgan, Yum!, Natwest and the Postcode Innovation Trust, bringing them closer to founders at every stage of their entrepreneurial journey. e: hello@hatchenterpise.org t: 020 7993 0074 Twitter: @HatchEnterprise FB: www.facebook.com/HatchEnterprise Instagram: hatchenterprise

At Hatch we support the Social Model of Disability, meaning we take the view that people are disabled by societal barriers, not by their impairment or difference. We know that to further our mission to create a more equitable world through entrepreneurship, we needed to take a step back and look into how we engage with and support founders who are supported through our work. A key takeaway from the recent report speaks to ensuring effective information and guidance is embedded into our recruitment and programme processes across our organisation. To do this we have: Given disability and neurodiversity training to programme staff and the wider team to ensure we can accommodate the needs of our community. Made changes to our website, social media and other touchpoints founders will engage with throughout their experience with us. Set up a new format for contacting the team personally, ensuring that people have access to the team throughout the application process and the programme itself to ask their questions and have them answered. Our Inclusive and Accessible Recruitment Guide produced by Diversity and Ability has been shared to offer insights to other organisations either already working with, or looking to work with Disabled and neurodivergent people. This report was made possible thanks to the Ares Charitable Foundation (Ares Management Corporation) and is part of our partnership to democratise access to entrepreneurship for Disabled and neurodivergent people. Being a parent and a business owner is a lot to juggle, and for Patrick Adom these identities have intersected to create Very Puzzled – a children’s puzzle and games business celebrating African and Caribbean cultures. The business was not only inspired by his daughter Naima – she is also involved in running it as the self-styled co-founder and Patrick hopes that what he builds as an entrepreneur can be passed on to her as his legacy. The vision is to create, “something where she could see her culture, her history, her heritage reflected, but also something for her in terms of an inheritance and opportunities that she might have in the future.” ❤️

How to embed disability-inclusive recruitment processes: A key executive summary from our Inclusive and Accessible Recruitment guide, produced by Diversity and Ability. We broke down some of the key takeaways from this section of the guide. What are the main recommendations in a nutshell? 1. Use a broad range of channels, platforms and websites to be able to attract and reach as diverse a pool of people as you can. 2. Be clear, open and honest about what inclusive practises you already have in place. 3. Get unconscious bias and inclusion training for staff who are involved in recruitment, interviews and programme delivery. 4. Build inclusivity and accessibility into a consistent recruitment process, e.g. having information in dierent formats or having the option to do any interviews by video call. This report was made possible thanks to the Ares Charitable Foundation (Ares Management Corporation) and is part of our partnership to democratise access to entrepreneurship for Disabled and neurodivergent people. The Inclusive and Accessible Recruitment guide brings together findings from a multi-month audit that began in early 2024. Produced for Hatch Enterprise by Diversity and Ability (D&A), a social enterprise led by and for Disabled people, the auditing team spoke to Hatch’s founders at length through focus groups, reviewed founder recruitment and programme materials, looked at communications aimed at founders and spoke to the charity’s staff about Hatch’s business support programmes. The aim of publishing the findings today is to continue a conversation within the sector and any organisation working to support Disabled and neurodivergent people by providing a visible and tangible report for other organisations outlining best practices when looking to attract and support Disabled and neurodivergent people in the UK. This report was made possible thanks to the Ares Charitable Foundation and is part of our partnership to democratise access to entrepreneurship for Disabled and neurodivergent people. #DisabilityPrideMonth #Inclusion #Accessibility

Helping impact-driven organisations get noticed | Founder of More Diverse Voices

As a neurodivergent human, I still sometimes struggle to feel "pride" about the way brain works. As a child I felt a HUGE amount of shame and I carried a lot of that with me into adulthood. But the older I've become, the more I've come to accept and love the person that I am. That sometimes (like anyone) I need help doing things or that I process things differently to others and that that is a beautiful thing. This frustration or sense of otherness I've felt all my life is actually also one of the main reasons I set up More Diverse Voices - something I am IMMENSELY PROUD OF. And so without my slightly different neurological pathways, I wouldn't be doing what I'm doing today. And I love what I do. So, thank you brain 🫡 As part of Disability Pride Month I'm partnering with Hatch Enterprise UK and delivering two lovely workshops to help founders create more inclusive content and unlearn bias in storytelling. First one is tomorrow, sign up below 👇 Removing bias from storytelling, Thursday 11th July 12-1PM online: https://lnkd.in/eqv5-tAD Inclusive copywriting and inclusive content design, Thursday 23rd July 12-12.30PM online: https://lnkd.in/e9wj28vX #DisabilityPrideMonth
