UK students are on summer break, but UK players in private capital remain busy. Connection Capital reports that 80% of UK high-net-worth individuals plan to invest in private equity and alternative assets next year, despite tax concerns. Revolut, a London-based fintech, is close to selling $500 million in employee-owned shares, valuing the company at $45 billion. The company has also received a UK banking license, boosting the startup sector's credibility. #privateequity #privatecapital Written by Rebecca Gaffney, Tom Robertson, Max Burke and H/Advisors Abernathy.

At long last, there is some good weather around London. Better late than never! This is the same sentiment LPs are currently experiencing when it comes to distributions. Private Equity News says investor confidence in them sits at a two-year high due to the increased use of partial exits, continuation vehicles, and NAV financing. The theme of novel tactics is present in many of this week's stories, with bank/asset manager tie-ups now in vogue, private credit willing to take on risk that Wall Street is avoiding, and PE lobbying to protect carried interest tax breaks in full swing in the US. As the FT highlights, these tactics will be necessary, as the current situation of raising new funds without deploying existing capital can't go on for much longer. #privateequity #privatecapital Written by Tom Robertson, Rebecca Gaffney, Max Burke and H/Advisors Abernathy.

It’s the tale of two capitals this week. Berlin is calling for the England football team on Sunday, whilst London is calling for new listings after the approval of the biggest overhaul of London listing rules in three decades, aimed at reviving the UK’s capital markets. These changes have been met with some strong criticism around shareholder rights, and whilst the FCA has acknowledged higher investor risk, it believes the changes will boost economic growth. Bringing high-growth start-ups, aligning the UK with international standards and enhancing competition is never a bad idea. Let’s hope for a double win: the listing changes are a success and England finally bring football home again (🤞) #privateequity #privatecapital Written by Tom Robertson, Rebecca Gaffney, Max Burke and H/Advisors Abernathy.

Our dedicated tennis fanatic Finlay Donaldson this week assessed the impact of Novak Djokovic’s confrontational on-court BBC interview after his win against Holger Rune in the 4th round of Wimbledon. In sports as in business, reputation management is key to a good relationship with the audience and, in the case of one of the greatest to play the sport, his legacy. Read more on our website, or on PRWeek, who published on Tuesday. https://bit.ly/462pIKL

Yesterday evening the H/Advisors Maitland team took to Battersea Park to compete in the JP Morgan Corporate Challenge. It was H/Advisors Maitland’s biggest ever team, with 13 runners completing the 5.6km course. Great experience all around and a very well organised event in support of Centrepoint. Already looking forward to running again next year! #JPMCC

In the last week, Keir Starmer has officially become the new Prime Minister of the UK, European elections are continuing to cause shockwaves, and speculation is increasing about Joe Biden ending his campaign. It is perhaps unsurprising that the leading story in this week's newsletter highlights the impact of politics on the sector, especially in the UK, where Labour's plans regarding 'carry' remain unclear. On a lighter note, if you decide to relocate to Milan, it's worth checking out Three Hills Capital Partners' latest venture, a new private members' club. #privateequity #privatecapital Written by Rebecca Gaffney, Tom Robertson, Max Burke and H/Advisors Abernathy.

Last night India qualified for their third T20 cricket world cup final. And it does so as the dominant force in world cricket, with the tournament, despite being hosted in the US and Caribbean, moulded to fit the timings and demands of the Indian cricket board and Indian population. This is reflective of India's rapid rise to global superpower, which as discussed in this newsletter has led giants such as Blackstone and KKR to significantly increase their investments in the country. While India works to increase its newfound influence on the world stage, questions are being asked about what's ahead for the old guard that is the G7. In his FT op-ed, Larry Fink believes infrastructure investment is the key to address the burden built up by the high debt and declining workforces its countries are facing. #privateequity #privatecapital Written by Tom Robertson, Rebecca Gaffney, Max Burke, and H/Advisors Abernathy

With just under two weeks to go until the UK goes to the polls, the country is all but certain we're a fortnight away from a new Prime Minister and dominant Labour majority. For the private capital industry, this means preparing for the changes this will bring sits top of the agenda. This week, Shadow Chancellor Rachel Reeves, while reaffirming that the party will be cracking down on carried interest, has highlighted co-investments where executives invest their own capital alongside clients will only be subject to the lower-level capital gains tax rate. While this has been well received, the other stories we cover this week on the take-private of Hargreaves Lansdown representing another hit to the London Stock Exchange and new tactics from PE firms causing 'shockwaves' in the industry suggest there is plenty to be done. The private capital world will therefore be listening intently to what other solutions are to come from the Chancellor-in-waiting. #privateequity #privatecapital Written by Tom Robertson, Rebecca Gaffney, Max Burke, and H/Advisors Abernathy
