At the beginning of the year, our team set some simple goals for ourselves and our business. One of those was very simple - to help more people because it's what makes us jump out of the bed every morning; and another was to use our role as an intermediary to bring D&I challenges to light in the legal industry, because quite simply we're not 'there' yet. On Tuesday evening, by co-sponsoring an event run by Don't Carry It Alone, we were able to bring those goals at least in part to reality. It was one of the most humbling and rewarding highlights of 2023. We always tell people when they interview for a role, to be their authentic selves as otherwise, how can you tell if it's the right fit for you? But what if you feel you can't and have to mask a condition for fear that it could lead to an unfair judgement on your abilities? Don't Carry It Alone was set up by Rebecca Owen as a support group for those navigating the challenges of working within the professional services sector whilst suffering from a chronic pain condition - a space where they can connect with others and feel empowered by sharing their experiences openly. We got to witness 5 brave people tell a room of (mostly) strangers about their condition, their journey to management of their condition and how they navigated their way to successful careers in the professional services sector in spite of this. How? Sheer resilience, determination and a strong support network (friends, family, bosses and colleagues). A room full of both allies and other sufferers left the event feeling full of admiration for those who told their stories....enlightened, educated, awake and connected.
