Jack Petchey’s commitment to empowering young people has had a profound impact on countless lives, including our young people. Through the Jack Petchey Foundation, his generosity and dedication have enabled us to reach and inspire so many young people through our programmes, allowing our coach-mentors to engage with them and significantly improve their life chances. Jack's belief in unlocking young people's potential and his passion for fostering personal development have been a cornerstone of our programmes. His legacy will continue to inspire us.

About us
Greenhouse Sports believes in the power of sport to raise the aspirations of young people and help them reach their full potential. We are a London-based charity, partnering with schools to deliver full-time, high-quality sport programmes that give young people the chance to experience structure, goal-setting, teamwork, a sense of achievement and mutual respect. Since 2002, over 40,000 young people have participated on our programmes, working with qualified coaches who are technically skilled in addition to being excellent role models and mentors. Through the relationships developed with participants, our coaches are able to effect change in the long-term development of their social, thinking, emotional and physical skills. We believe that every young person should have the opportunity to thrive. To find out more on how we use sport to inspire people, visit www.greenhousesports.org

In 1983, seatbelts were made mandatory in cars because strong evidence showed they significantly reduced injuries. Similarly, decades of research reveal that physical activity greatly benefits mental health, boosting resilience, confidence, and behaviour in young people. So, why isn't physical activity a statutory requirement in schools? Recently, our CEO, Don Barrell, discussed a pressing issue on BBC Radio with Jacqueline Shepherd: less than 50% of children meet the recommended 60 minutes of daily exercise. This isn’t just about missing out on physical health benefits; it's a societal issue with deep-rooted causes and long-term impacts. Listen to Don's full interview at 3hr 09: https://lnkd.in/eGGZTckj Today also marks the start of National School Sports Week – an annual celebration of PE, play, and sport. It's a crucial moment to emphasise the importance of sport in schools, and we strongly support the recent call by 5 leading sports for a minimum of 2 hours of mandatory physical activity in the curriculum, backed by government investment. Currently, non-statutory guidelines mean schools aren't mandated to prioritise physical activity, placing the responsibility on young people who face a range of barriers. We know what we do works, because we live it every day. By providing young people access to sport, our coaches – working in the most deprived areas – are deeply embedded into the school system. They deliver hours of sport sessions and mentorship to students – before, during, and after school, year-round. This access to sport and physical activity, coupled with their transformative mentoring, enhances confidence and happiness among young people. We invite policymakers, educators, and community leaders to witness firsthand the impact of Greenhouse coaches in schools. Present in over 70 schools nationwide and reaching more than 8,000 young people, our coaches are gamechanger in the lives of thousands of young people – and we're striving to provide this opportunity to as many children as possible. #NSSW2024 #TeamForLife #GreenhouseSports

Double school sport hours, heads of five sports tell political parties… "We hope that the manifestos due to be published next week will include a commitment to put physical literacy at the heart of the school day by having a minimum of two hours of quality Sport and Physical Education mandated within the National Curriculum and every child guaranteed the opportunity to be active for an hour a day inside and outside of the school setting." The next government (frankly any government) has an opportunity to make a simple, life-changing step to improve the outcomes of millions of children - in physical and mental health and wellbeing, in education and all the positive associations that come from putting play at the heart of the development of young people. We know this at Greenhouse Sports because we live it. At Greenhouse Sports we fully endorse the call from leading sports The Football Association, England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB) England Rugby, The Rugby Football League, and our great partner LTA to 'put physical literacy at the heart of the school day.' We are a living example of how this delivers success. Our coach-mentors provide expert sports coaching and personal development sessions for hours beyond PE each day, week and year for more than 9000 children a year, specifically from the most disadvantaged backgrounds - all for free - and the outcomes are much higher school attendance and higher performance in education. More so, they are healthier and happier and, supported by our coach-mentors, build the resilience and the confidence to meet the clear and present challenges of growing up today. If this is not in any manifesto this week, our young people will want answers from those who want our votes. We will challenge them with an invitation - come to our schools, meet our coaches and the next generation at play and see how it works - they will show you where you are going missing. #TeamforLife https://lnkd.in/eHUMRHSB

We’re delighted to be one of the Sunday Times Best Places to Work 2024! We are a community of individuals dedicated to levelling the playing field for young people. At our core are the Greenhouse Sports coaches and staff who strive for this daily. Which is why we are very proud for them to have seen this recognised by The Times in naming us one of the Sunday Times Best Places to Work. It is our coaches and staff's efforts in serving the young people and communities we support that drives a positive working culture, committed to inclusion, allyship and progress; fostering that mentoring and always learning environment crucial for all of us to hold true to the vision and mission of our charity. All this at a time when we've nearly doubled in size in just over two years, increased the number of young people we support, and are present fulltime in more schools than ever before.
