Arup Engineering Intern | Bath Civil Engineering Student | Gold Scholar | Student and Outreach Ambassador | Tuesday IStructE Group Bath Uni Rep | Civil Engineering Education Rep

Today marks the final day of my Bridge Engineering Summer Internship at Mott MacDonald. Ryde Pier: During the past 8 weeks, I have worked predominantly on the Ryde Pier bridge restoration project, the oldest pier in the world! I have developed my ability within: - Hand calculations; girders, bracing, connections; - Software like Rhino, AutoCAD, LUSAS, Mathcad, and Excel; - Hand sketches of different views, elements and detailing. After working on the project for weeks, I had an exciting opportunity to see the structure in Isle of Wight last week. The visit was insightful as I got to see the project's scale and got the perspectives of contractors and technical engineers. Outreach: Bridges4Schools which is an educational initiative to introduce bridge engineering to schools. I had the pleasure to assist and guide students in year 5 and 6 at Elmwood Junior School. During the day, they had the opportunity to build a life sized bridge and walk across it. Witnessing the enthusiasm of so many students in construction gear doing the project was truly inspiring. They adhered to safety protocols, including wearing personal protective equipment (PPE), which underscored its importance. The primary educational objectives were to impart knowledge about various bridge types, their strengths, weaknesses, and sustainable practices in bridge construction. Acknowledgement: I wanted to say a special thank you to Ian Palmer for this opportunity and Philip Chalk for his technical expertise. Thank you to everyone else that I have worked with and make me feel welcomed to the team. #engineering #bridges #bridgeengineering #opportunity #mottmac #internship #intern #lusas #autocad #rhino #teamwork #learning

International Development with Economics student, UpReach associate, and Gold Scholar at the University of Bath

After spending 13 months in Auckland, I am proud to announce that my 12-month internship with Volleyball New Zealand has come to an end. Working at a National Sporting Organisation was completely new to me at the start of my internship, but with help from my fellow Uni of Bath interns Jack Mills and Rosie Bignell, I was able to power through. The year has certainly been a rollercoaster, with some very, very intense events weeks, but the reward of seeing an event you worked so hard on planning and organising together pay off a success is more than worth it. Over the course of this year, I have: ·      Coordinated and managed the registration processes for teams and individuals through Friendly Manager, VNZ’s player database system. ·      Constructed the draws for each division of competition based on the number of teams playing, assigned teams to duty each game and ensured that there were no errors in the draw. ·      Managed the communication with participants, ensuring timely and accurate relay of information regarding competitions, fixtures and results. ·      Managed the budget for tournaments, ensuring resources are efficiently and correctly allocated. ·      Adapted and altered draws due to last minute withdrawals/injuries at games or moved courts around due to late running courts and time constraints. ·      Communicated professionally and succinctly with team managers and coaches to alert them of any changing game/duty times or locations. ·      Led a team of 30+ volunteers and staff members at events to ensure everybody was on task and the event was running smoothly. Thank you so much to every single person at VNZ for being so welcoming and helpful, with a special thanks to Steven Upfold for jumping in to watch over events, especially with everything else on your plate. Finally, I want to send a massive thank you to Sabrina Earnshaw, my placement supervisor at the University of Bath for always being so helpful, friendly and for always looking out for my best interests. I have met some absolutely incredible people through this role, and I wish everyone in New Zealand's volleyball community both inside and outside of VNZ all the best in the future!

Meet Ada, a Gold Scholarship student from coastal Kent. Growing up with her younger brother and mum, who works as a carer, Ada always dreamed of attending university but wasn't sure what it would look like or what opportunities it might bring. Ada applied to the Gold Scholarship Programme, which supports undergraduate students from disadvantaged backgrounds. This scheme offers a bursary in exchange for 50 hours of volunteering and participation in various events throughout the academic year. In her first year, Ada helped with several small projects, including museum volunteering and hosting a silent disco. This summer, she worked as an intern in the Advancement Office, where she developed her professional skills. Ada shared, "The incredible support network I have gained from the Gold Scholarship Team, fellow students, and mentors has been beyond transformative. I am more connected to Bath than I ever imagined and cherish the wonderful community I have gained."

  • Congratulations to Gold Scholar Jamil Adjallah for being selected to participate in the University of Cambridge Summer CAMP, which will allow him to develop a wide range of skills and build his networks and experience. A huge thank you also to Gold Mentor Matthew Punter who supported Jamil as part of the Gold Summer Goals Mentoring Project: "having a brilliant mentor to help me understand how to curate applications and communicate in interviews was, without a doubt, a huge part of my successful application". #mentoring #summeropportunities #scholarshipopportunities #research #studentexperience

Following a written application and interview process, I am very proud to announce that I have been selected to participate in the University of Cambridge Summer CAMP (Cambridge Access to Mental Health and Psychology)! A massive thanks to the University of Bath Placements Department to alerting me to this oportunity and to Matthew Punter for helping me prepare as part of the University of Bath Gold Scholarship Programme mentoring scheme. Always proud to be a Gold Scholar and having a brilliant mentor to help me understand how to curate applications and comminicate in interviews was without a doubt a huge part of my successful application. Summer CAMP tasks students with developing a 1200-word research proposal for a hypothetical masters level study which is a great way to expand on an aspect of postgraduate study not commonly expanded upon in undergraduate study. Furthermore, a focus on recognising barriers and underrepresentation of certain groups in higher education and taking steps to challenge this is a brilliant part of the programme. Moreover, I’m extremely excited to work alongside Lukas Gunschera as my supervisor and am looking forward to learning a lot more about the methods and techniques employed in social media and neurological research to employ in my hypothetical research proposal.

Automation Research Engineer at GKN Aerospace

Thrilled and honoured to share that I have received the Director’s Choice Award for my contribution to STEM outreach at GKN Aerospace! Starting my journey here as an intern, I have had the privilege of witnessing and being a part of our outreach program's remarkable growth, from just small partnerships to now reaching 10,000 students this academic year. Thank you so much John Watton for encouraging this - your vision, drive and support have all paid off. Thank you to my fellow inspirational STEM committee members for your continuous commitment on top of your intense day jobs Ian Gent, Megan Williams, Vaishnavi Shankar, Bethany Hall, Laura Bean, Nur Ain Ariffin, Jonathan Craig and Emily Field. I’m so proud of us! 🌟 This achievement is a testament to the incredible dedication and teamwork of everyone involved, including our apprentices and interns who volunteer for our STEM events. Our collective efforts have made a real impact, inspiring the next generation of innovators and engineers, with the most recent work experience feedback showing 100% of the students as interested in joining the aerospace industry. Thank you Sameer Savani for recognising this hard work and we will continue expanding our reach, highlighting that engineering is for everyone! #STEM #Outreach #GKNAerospace #STARawards

Hello, I would like to share the great news of the most recent rebrand of ReMind UK. I am happy to be joining this fantastic organization and I look forward to work with them on many projects in the future! My first project with ReMind UK was at the Bath Festival of Motoring where we represented the charity and raised awareness about Dementia.

BSc Social Science Student | Gold Scholar

Volunteering for Shaw Trust Bath has allowed me to establish connections within the wider Bath community and feel more at home during first year. Dedicating a few hours per week to help others should never be underestimated when adjusting to a new environment. Meeting fellow colleagues who share the same passion for second hand clothing and preserving natural resources has been a cherished experience. Greeting customers and bringing new life and homes to pre loved items has allowed me to explore my retail, customer service and commercial awareness skills which I ever knew existed! I have especially loved visual merchandising throughout the seasons, experimenting with various creative displays to entice customers. I have also volunteered for Bath Mencap Society which has especially made me feel more connected to my personal identity. At times I have really missed the enriching experiences of the SEND world. Speaking to those with learning difficulties over a few rounds of bowling each week has been so rewarding on both sides. As a proud neurodivergent I have found it so inspiring to witness such a supportive and accessible group. I am looking forward to resuming these volunteering roles in the new academic year and challenging myself to start new opportunities. Without the University of Bath Gold Scholarship Programme I would never have considered volunteering whilst studying. I am so grateful for all the skills and people I have met thanks to the GSP volunteering and approved role requirements! #volunteering #preloved #wellbeing #community #ShawTrust #Mencap #neurodiversity
