The History of Teesside Steelmaking ⚙️⛓️ 🏭 Teesside's steelmaking history began in the 1850s with the discovery of iron ore in the Cleveland Hills near Eston. This discovery fueled massive industrial growth, turning Teesside into a major steel production hub. 🏞 At its peak, the steelworks employed over 40,000 people and played a crucial role in the Industrial Revolution, earning a global reputation for high-quality steel. 👨🏭 👩🏭 One of the most notable projects using Teesside steel was the Sydney Harbour Bridge, built by the local company Dorman Long. In 1967, the steelworks were nationalised and became part of the British Steel Corporation, with operations centralised around a blast furnace at Redcar. 🏗 🌉 In 1999, British Steel merged with Dutch company Hoogovens to form Corus. This merger led to significant workforce reductions, with many workers taking voluntary redundancy or early retirement. 📉 💸 In 2003, Corus deemed many of its Teesside operations, including the blast furnace, as surplus to requirements, raising concerns about potential closures. 🛑 ✋ A temporary reprieve came in 2005 when a ten-year deal was signed with four overseas slab buyers, ensuring a market for Teesside steel. However, in 2007, Corus was acquired by the Indian company Tata. The global recession in 2009 led to a collapse in steel prices, causing the consortium buying Teesside's steel to back out of their contract. Consequently, the blast furnace was mothballed in 2010. 💥📉⤵️ Later that year, Thai steel producer SSI signed a memorandum of understanding to buy the Redcar site from Corus, bringing hope that steel production on Teesside could restart - it would 5 years later that SSI collapsed. The furnace would then be closed and later demolished. On a positive note, steelmaking is set to return to Teesside following an announcement that it will be the location for one of British Steel's electric arc furnaces. ♻️♻️🔋⚡🔋 Proud to be Northern! The Origins of Teesside's Chemical Industry! 🏭 Teesside, known for its thriving chemical industry since the early 20th century, saw significant growth during the 1930s and 1950s. Billingham and Wilton were key towns in this development, and have become big names in the chemical industry. 📈 📊 💼 Originally the small village, Billingham transformed dramatically due to the First World War's demand for nitrates used in explosives. In 1917, it was chosen as the site for synthetic ammonia production. Though the war ended before completion, the plant adapted to produce fertilisers, boosting the town's growth. 🔧 By 1926, major chemical companies merged to form Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI), further expanding Billingham and by 1932, the plant employed 5,000 workers, becoming a major chemical centre. The Second World War saw renewed demand for ammonia and high-performance aviation fuel, solidifying Billingham's industrial significance. 👨🔧 Wilton's development in the 1940s further bolstered Teesside's chemical industry. ICI began constructing the site in 1945, with its grand opening in 1949. Heralded as a trailblazer, Wilton remains a major chemical production site in the UK. 📃 ✒🤝 Today, Teesside's chemical industry continues to thrive, with Billingham and Wilton forever at its heart. 👏 Proud to be Northern!
