We are committed to preserving and regenerating nature by responsibly sourcing materials, managing forests and operations sustainably, and reducing water usage. Our targets for 2025 include improving biodiversity in our forests, implementing biodiversity programs in our paper mills, and having water management plans at all our paper mills and packaging sites. Colleagues at our Coullons paper mill, in France, planted three flower meadows at the entrance of the mill, including a variety of 15 plant species to help support biodiversity by attracting new varieties of insects. The insects can take shelter in a new insect house, which the team built from scratch using recycled materials. At our other French paper mill in Kaysersberg, 15 colleagues constructed two insect houses in collaboration with the local environmental protection association, Sentinelle Nature Alsace. The insect houses were placed on two newly planted flower meadows at the mill entrance, allowing the insects to easily access food from the flowers. We have been working with biotechnology businesses to explore alternative fibres for paper and plastic, such as straw, hemp, seaweed and even cocoa shells. In an innovative pilot programme with RISE Research Institutes of Sweden, we explored how the properties of straw and seaweed could potentially work as a packaging product in comparison to more traditional materials including recycled hardwood and softwood. We prioritise creating a safe, diverse, and inclusive workplace and actively participating in our communities. The Leadership in Action programme for senior managers was implemented to exemplify safety leadership and provide training for front-line managers to take ownership of their teams’ safety. Clear roles were given to employees, processes were streamlined, and user-friendly support systems were introduced to enable active engagement and collaboration, ensuring a safer work environment. Within a year of implementing these measures, our packaging site in Ghimbav, Romania, had become one of our highest-performing, safest sites with 784 days without a Loss Time Accident at the end of 2023/24. Find out more about our work with people and communities in our Sustainability Report 2024. https://ow.ly/8m2050SAjGv
