Unlocking the huge potential of the North East visitor economy as the first-ever regional tourism pilot in England.
About us
Destination North East England is a regional partnership with an ambition to double the size of the visitor economy in ten years. The region will work together to improve skills, develop products, work with travel trade, drive innovation, support business events and improve the accessibility and sustainability of the sector. The North East has been chosen to deliver the first-ever Destination Development Partnership pilot in England, receiving £2.25 million from national government. The pilot will be led by NewcastleGateshead Initiative (NGI) on behalf of the region, working with delivery partners Visit Northumberland and Visit County Durham and in partnership with all seven local authorities. The partnership pilot will act as a potential blueprint for the rest of England and help shape the future landscape of tourism organisations, delivering local economic growth through the visitor economy. This pilot has been the catalyst for the development of a ten-year plan that will double the size of our visitor economy and position our region as a must-see destination, whilst attracting private investment and driving growth. This is a regional collaboration and an incredible opportunity to grow the visitor economy in the North East of England, developing our regional eco-system and supporting industry. Destination North East England operates across all seven local authorities.

Another one of our travel trade forums was held this week, this time at Newcastle International Airport! Our travel trade manager Alex is working hard to bring key stakeholders and travel trade ready businesses together to take North East England to the world ✈️
✈️Yesterday the Travel Trade Forum were out in force at Newcastle International Airport, huge thanks to Chris Ion for hosting us, alongside Laura Hartshorne and Tom Spencer. 🌎The group got the opportunity to hear the airports key strategies, understand and be involved, agree how we can work together as a region, to bring more visitors to the #NorthEast and support international routes. We then went on a tour of the airport, including a visit to the new stunning Aspire Lounge, saw the impressive changes airside, with the airport recenty receiving the highest accolade, for their welcome and special assistance services provided to visitors, from the Civil Aviation Authority. 🏆 🍰After this we then headed over to the lovely DoubleTree by Hilton at Newcastle International Airport ideally located right next to the airport and part of the Cairn Group, with special thanks to Sarah Barber for hosting us for an impressive afternoon tea. We then discussed agenda ideas for the next and biggest meeting yet to come in October.
