Have you ever looked at a plant or animal up close and envied its colourful coat? Dr Benjamin Droguet, one of our 2021 PhD award winners, has spent the last few years developing a biodegradable colour platform inspired by our natural surroundings. Why? Current synthetic dyes present huge challenges for the environment, rarely degrading and causing substantial greenhouse gas emissions. Stubble grows on some people's faces, but did you know that it grows in the ground, too? Crop residue is left behind after each season of harvest, and in India, farmers often burn these remains before the next season. But this practice can have major environmental repercussions - a challenge that Dr Himansha Singh, one of our 2017 PhD student award winners, is tackling. Her work as the co-founder of Craste, a start-up producing sustainable packaging using crop waste, was recently recognised at our 60th anniversary ceremony. Interested in learning more?
