The ongoing 2024 NATO Summit in Washington DC, where the 32 countries that make up the alliance are commemorating 75 years, re-emphasizes that companies need to think holistically about geopolitical risk. Companies should include geopolitics in their strategic planning, consider mitigation options and solicit internal buy-in across management, business lines and regions. They also need to test the maturity of their strategic planning and provoke long-term thinking through scenario planning and crisis management workshops. Adequate preparation will help companies determine the success of their businesses. Shifting geopolitics are on full display at this year’s summit: • The Ukraine-Russia War and the future of European security has shocked NATO back into relevance in recent years. Allies are expected to reaffirm support for Ukraine and announce increased defense spending levels. • This year’s summit also welcomes NATO’s newest member, Sweden, which formally joined the alliance in March 2024. Allies are expected to also strengthen partnerships with ideologically aligned countries in the Indo-Pacific, such as New Zealand, Australia, South Korea and Japan. • However, this year's summit also comes amidst recent domestic political turmoil in many NATO countries, with far-right parties that are skeptical of the alliance gaining ground across Europe. The results of the US election in November will also strongly impact the strength of Washington's commitments to NATO in the coming years. • Despite this, NATO will remain a globally important player in world affairs. Control Risks will continue to monitor the developments and their impacts on the macro geopolitical risk environment for clients. Thanks to CNBC for having me on for a quick take on Hungarian PM Viktor Orbán's visit to Kyiv, Moscow, and Beijing over the past week. Orbán is keen to play the role of diplomatic broker but is unlikely to succeed in bringing both sides to the negotiating table. And a special thank you to Sílvia Amaro for hosting me during my very first (live) TV appearance. #RussiaUkrainewar #Ukraine #Hungary #HungaryRussia

Between the Russian missile strike on a children’s hospital in Kyiv and the NATO Summit kicking off today there is, unfortunately, plenty to discuss. Here is Control Risks’ latest Ukraine-Russia war bi-weekly update (also check Bota I.' interview with CNBC today): -         Frontlines - The delivery of Western ammunition has helped Ukraine reduce the gap in shells supply with Russia, both in terms of quantity (from a 7-to-1 ratio to approximately 4-to-1) and quality, with a higher factor of effectiveness. Nevertheless, the focus remains on the Donetsk region and the town of Chasiv Yar, where Russia is concentrating its offensive operations, facing extremely high costs. Russian troops approaching highway T0504, an important Ukrainian supply line that connects Chasiv Yar to Pokrovsk, may prompt a reconfiguration of Ukraine’s defensive operations in the area. -         Airstrikes - Russia’s missile strikes on 8 July grabbed headlines due to the targets being a children’s hospital and a maternity ward in the capital Kyiv. Strikes, whether with missiles, drones or glide bombs, occur daily against civilian infrastructure. The recent evolution in timing and targeting of these attacks, particularly against power generation facilities, will prompt increasing – albeit late – bilateral air defence support commitments from Ukraine’s Western allies. -         Diplomacy - The first day of the NATO Summit is taking place today in Washington, D.C. Member states are discussing a EUR 40 bn military assistance fund for Ukraine in 2025, which provides reassurance for Ukraine but will likely only be sufficient to support defensive operations.
