Community Foundation Northern Ireland
Philanthropic Fundraising Services
Working hand in hand with communities to build a better future
About us
The Community Foundation for Northern Ireland is a local, independent charitable foundation, connecting people who care with causes that matter. We help communities in need, drive social change and change lives, through impactful grant-making and delivering innovative programmes. Supporting bespoke giving and providing philanthropic advice we are a trusted, secure means through which donors choose how, when and where to give and we provide a range of management and grant-making services for charitable funds. Formerly known as Northern Ireland Voluntary Trust and founded in 1979 with a grant of £1m from the then Dept of Communities at Stormont, the Foundation has awarded over £100m to date to groups and organisations across NI Between April 2013 & March 2018: We received 3338 grant applications and Awarded 1263 grants worth £26.2m Rooted in a tradition of community connection, risk taking and innovation, we live in the world of balancing what donors want to fund, what we think is important, and what communities are telling us is important. There are about 15,000 charities in Northern Ireland, employing 45,000 staff and 250,000 volunteers, with a total income of £600m. Much of this income (70%+) is coming from public and statutory sources. As a centre of expertise for the promotion and practice of giving, the Foundation expects to encourage more and new funding into the sector to support social and civic innovation, and communities in need. Working closely with partners such as individuals, corporates, professional advisors, sister organisations and government we encourage and advocate for a better environment and appetite to support strategic philanthropy in a mixed economy. Huge thank you to CO3 Chief Officers 3rd Sector and to Finance Minister Caoimhe Archibald MLA for today's roundtable. We welcome commitments from the Minister around the delivery of a Social Value Strategy and wider commitments to support the VCSE sector in Northern Ireland. Our Director of Policy, Communications and Public Affairs, John O'Doherty raised the importance of supporting philanthropic giving to ensure long term diverse investment in the VCSE sector and sought support for the delivery of a philanthropy strategy for Northern Ireland. #NorthernIreland #Philanthropy

Hear from our Director of Programmes, Dawn Shackels earlier this year at the #SCIHardwiringFairness Conference👇
Earlier this year, Social Change Initiative hosted its #SCIHardwiringFairness Conference, where guests from diverse backgrounds had the opportunity to hear more about how governments worldwide are implementing legislative models to reduce inequalities and improve wellbeing, and how these practices can be adopted in #NorthernIreland. Hear what Padraic Quirk from SCI, Dawn Shackels from Community Foundation Northern Ireland and Sarah Davidson CB from Carnegie UK said about the event ▶️ We have also published a short summary of the conference - click here to read 👉https://lnkd.in/dfmFM-tp
