There was a lot to digest in this week's #KingsSpeech. It was encouraging to see the new government's commitments in prevention, mental health and performance demonstrating long term, sustainable approaches to the #NHS’s key challenges. 📸  This CF snapshot summarises key priorities relevant to health and healthcare, which I hope you find helpful.

Earlier this month, we were delighted to host the CF team at our inaugural summer retreat – a time to reflect and reset, but also a time to recognise the fantastic achievements of individuals and teams so far this year. With (some) glimpses of sunshine, it was a fantastic couple of days of collaboration. As CF continues to evolve and grow, our core purpose remains – to have an enduring positive impact on health and healthcare. Thank you to our colleagues and clients for your continued support. We have an exciting journey ahead! ✨

For most people, being treated at or as close to home as possible is what is best for their health and how they want to be cared for. It is also most efficient and cost-effective for the NHS. Political focus and resources must shift to ensuring more people can access care closer to home in their local community and at an earlier stage of illness, with more continuity of care, rather than be left waiting until their health needs require hospital treatment. Our research with Carnall Farrar (CF) found that when you examine the NHS budget more specifically, the greatest economic returns come from investing in #PrimaryCare and #CommunityCare. Here we see £14 added to the economy for every £1 invested. The government needs to commit to support primary care further, including an expansion of delivery of care at scale by securing the future of primary care networks (PCNs), building on the success of GP federations in many areas and a commitment to establishing primary care provider collaboratives. Read our Primary Care Network's vision for general practice at scale and PCNs, which has been informed by extensive engagement with members 👇 🔗 https://bit.ly/3rvAnhf #PCnetworj

    • Primary care is... the NHS contact point for most people... the most productive part of the health service... reduces pressures on other parts of the system... and provides a £14 return for every £1 invested. We call on the government to provide more care closer to home #PCnetwork

This morning CF’s CEO, Hannah Farrar joined LaingBuisson’s webinar – speaking to 300+ industry leaders across the health sector about the role of public-private collaboration over the next five years of government. Labour set clear intentions in their manifesto to invest in the NHS and make it ‘fit for the future’. With waiting lists at an all-time high, leveraging public-private partnerships could play a crucial part in tackling capacity issues, also bringing in additive expertise and new technology. Key topics were discussed such as the feasibility of the party's plan for addressing the waiting lists, technology as an enabler, and better long-term planning. #NHS #GeneralElection2024 Justin Ash David Hare MBE Tim Read

Dementia is one of the most significant challenges facing our society today, with the burden on health systems ever-increasing due to a growing and ageing population. We were proud to work with the Alzheimer's Society to undertake crucial new research to highlight the social and economic effects of dementia in the UK, updating existing figures for the overall costs and occurrence of the disease. Using a linked, record-level healthcare dataset from the North West London Discover-NOW secure data environment we were able to develop a detailed understanding of healthcare resource use among people with dementia. 🔹 There are currently estimated to be 982,000 people living with dementia in the UK, rising to 1.4 million in 2040. 🔹 Our research revealed the total cost of dementia is a staggering £42 billion per year (23% of NHS spend), and this figure is expected to reach £90 billion by 2040. 🔹 Shockingly, findings revealed only an estimated 1.4% of the total healthcare spend on dementia patients is allocated to their diagnosis and treatment. 🔹 The largest cost associated with dementia is the cost of unpaid care, which accounts for 50% of the total in 2024. To date, this work has been endorsed by the Department of Health and Social Care, Health Minister and Shadow Health Minister, using it to highlight the critical importance of diagnosing and treating dementia. Given the burden of the disease and the exciting opportunity of science in new biomarkers and disease modifying therapy, it has never been more important than now to have a data-driven view of this using real world evidence.
