A new BGS-led project, funded by the European Space Agency - ESA will study the effect earthquakes have on occurrences of other natural hazards in the long-term, by looking at slope dynamics following a major earthquake and how these processes can also affect flood hazards. Our vision is for a safer, more sustainable & prosperous planet and a future based on sound geoscientific solutions.
About us
The British Geological Survey is a part of the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and is its principal supplier of national capability in geoscience. It advances understanding of the structure, properties and processes of the solid Earth system through interdisciplinary surveys, monitoring and research for the benefit of society. It is the UK's premier provider of objective and authoritative geoscientific data, information and knowledge for wealth creation, sustainable use of natural resources, reducing risk and living with the impacts of environmental change. We are a world-leading geoscience centre for survey and monitoring, modelling and research and data and knowledge.

At the British Geological Survey, our mission is to deepen the understanding of our planet for the benefit of society. Since 1835, we've been the UK's leading provider of independent geological expertise. Our work support a secure energy transition, helps communities adapt to geological hazards, and unlocks the potential of groundwater worldwide. We are committed to fostering equality, diversity, and inclusion, and to nurturing the next generation of geoscientists. Assessments of national coastal erosion vulnerability often fail to consider how the localised properties and structures of geological deposits can affect coastal change when combined with coastal processes. BGS GeoCoast aims to plug this data gap by providing a suite of nationally consistent geological properties data that can be used by stakeholders to inform coastal management, planning and adaptation around Great Britain. https://lnkd.in/eFCi4fA2

Today marks 55 years since Apollo 11 landed on the moon for the first time. We have a collection of origial slides from the Apollo 11 & 12 space missions. In 1969 NASA asked former BGS (then the Institute of Geological Sciences) employee Stanley Bowie to become one of only four principal investigators in the UK to examine the lunar samples sent back by Apollo 11 & 12. The slides arrived with the samples. The samples were on display at our London office at the time, drawing huge crowds. Do you recognise the children looking at the rocks? If so, let us know!

Delighted to be involved in this study, investigating how much, and where, hydrogen needs to be stored at a local level. BGS were able to provide subsurface expertise locating where hydrogen gas may be stored on the East Coast. Our findings show that lots of hydrogen needs to be stored imminently and that market intervention will likely be required in order achieve decarbonisation ambitions.
Hydrogen is poised to play a central role in the UK's journey to net zero. As a clean energy carrier, low-carbon hydrogen offers versatility – providing a pathway to decarbonise sectors that are difficult to electrify and affording flexibility across the energy system. Developed in partnership with The University of Edinburgh and British Geological Survey, our recent research report for the Industrial Decarbonisation Research and Innovation Centre (IDRIC) uses new methods to model hydrogen storage demand and capacity in the East Coast Cluster – one of the UK’s key decarbonisation clusters. Large-scale underground hydrogen storage (UHS) will underpin the ability to integrate hydrogen into a decarbonised energy system.
