In a paper published in JCO Oncology Practice the following question was posted to clinicians: "How much does knowledge of the patient's insurance influence your decision to obtain the testing?" Almost half of the doctors, 47%, said this is a very significant factor, meaning if the insurance doesn't cover it, perhaps they won't order the test even though it might be lifesaving. While this paper was published in 2017, as Maurie Markman, MD from City of Hope points out in this Medscape commentary, it remains a critical question today and is becoming even more important everyday as new targeted and tumor agnostic therapies become available. A must-listen regarding the importance of biomarker results and the critical role they play in the sequence of treatment for patients with NSCLC. It’s reassuring to hear that the needs of the community, such as testing that covers all guideline-recommended biomarkers, fast turnaround times, and producing results on limited tissue, are what we are all working on daily here at Biofidelity. I’m excited to see the impact ASPYRE-Lung will have on testing paradigms by bringing complete NSCLC biomarker testing to the point of care with results in 2 days, even on limited tissue samples.

Congratulations to the people of the great state of Pennsylvania for becoming the 20th state to enact comprehensive biomarker legislation. Earlier this month, Governor Shapiro signed into law a bill requiring that state-regulated health insurance policies, including Medicaid, cover comprehensive biomarker testing. Commenting on the new law, American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN), said: "Despite the proven benefits, insurance coverage has failed to keep pace with innovations and advancements in biomarker testing and treatment, resulting in some patients being forced to decide whether to pay out-of-pocket or go without the testing that may connect them with lifesaving treatment. House Bill 1754 will help address these gaps in access to biomarker testing."
