July in Tech History 1979 – The first Sony Walkman, the TPS-L2, went on sale in Japan and was the world’s first low-cost personal stereo. The Walkman went on to become one of Sony’s most successful brands of all time. 1981 – Donkey Kong was released for sale and introduced us to two of the most famous game characters in video game history, Donkey Kong and Mario. Donkey Kong was named after the game’s villain, a pet gorilla, and the game’s hero was originally called "Jumpman" and was not a plumber but a carpenter, but was later renamed Mario once the game became popular and Nintendo decided to use the character in their future games. 1983 – The Famicon system is released in Japan by Nintendo. Two years later, the Famicom system would be modified with a copy protection system, a front-loading cartridge mechanism, and a redesigned chassis and released in America as the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). 1985 – Commodore launched its Amiga personal computer, also known as the Amiga 1000 or A1000.
