After a year full of setbacks in 2023, Islamic State (IS) group this year carried out a number of mass-casualty attacks in Iran and Russia that were a stark reminder of the group’s ongoing threat. June 2024 marked the 10th anniversary of IS’s “caliphate” declaration, with the group claiming that it was “growing stronger and expanding”. Newsletter | Disinformation Watch There’s anger in China and SE Asia after it was revealed that the US military operated a disinformation campaign during the Covid pandemic discrediting the Chinese Sinovac vaccines. The effort, which the Pentagon has not denied, targeted the Philippines in 2020 and 2021, and experts fear it may have contributed to the country’s Covid death toll. We looking into why and how the campaign happened. In technology news, it has been found that ten of the most popular AI chatbots will repeat pro-Russian disinformation when prompted over contentious news narratives, pulling its replies from known inauthentic “news” websites.
