Coastal cities have long thrived as bustling hubs of trade and culture. But with climate change altering our shorelines, we face new challenges. Rising seas, fiercer storms, and erosion demand urgent solutions. At Hunter's Point South in NYC, we’re leading by example. This former industrial zone is now a beacon of sustainable development, harmonizing with nature to guard against floods and rising tides. Hear more from Vincent Lee, Principal, on Hunter's Point South and explore the actions were taking to build resilience into coastal cities: https://lnkd.in/g4B9brDS #WeAreArup #ChangingCoastlines #UrbanResilience #ClimateAction #HuntersPointSouth

#Ad paid and presented by Arup “If you don’t have parks in your community you don’t have a healthy community.”: Hunter’s Point South Park enlisted experts to find nature-based solutions that could protect communities from flood risk while also providing a green space away from the built environment of New York.🏞️ Creating resilient and inviting public spaces may allow coastal, urban cities like New York to mitigate the effects of climate change and become a model for sustainable development solutions.🌊🏙️ Find out more about the experts creating innovative ways to address climate change in the #BlueHorizons series, streaming now. Our connection with the ocean is profound. It has shaped life on Earth and continues to influence our daily lives in visible and invisible ways. While humanity has thrived thanks to the ocean, we've also significantly altered it. How can we protect our seas while using them responsibly? #BlueHorizons, a new branded series presented by the World Ocean Council and produced by BBC StoryWorks, dives into our intrinsic connection with the ocean. Through human-led stories, the series explores how the ocean is connected with each and every one of our lives – be it the ecosystem feeding livelihoods, the production and transport of products we use everyday, or the water we need to stay alive. Featured series include contributions from: everwave, Odfjell SE, Aga Khan Foundation, Nestlé Purina PetCare Europe, The Aspen Institute, Science Foundation Ireland, Coral Reef Alliance, Arup, Acadian Seaplants, High Seas Alliance, RightShip, Sustainable Surf, Bloomberg Philanthropies Ocean Fund, ICEYE, Ørsted 👉 Watch the full series here : https://lnkd.in/e6mqZBJX

Did COP28 create a buildings breakthrough? In our final episode of Sustainable Forces Podcast for season two, our host Dr Michelle Dickinson (MNZM) chats to Cristina Gamboa, CEO at the World Green Building Council and Nigel Tonks, our Sustainable Development Director for Property. Together, they break down the Buildings Breakthrough agenda and explain how collaboration is creating a cleaner global building sector. Cristina shares, “The buildings breakthrough is happening with the commitments behind it to implement decarbonisation road maps, advance and promote better standards and address the just transition we want to make happen.” Join us and find out about: • The Buildings Breakthrough launch • What happened at the UN’s Buildings and Climate Global Forum in Paris • Global examples of decarbonising the buildings sector • Tips and inspiration for creating change Listen and subscribe here: https://bit.ly/3S13ymq #Buildingsbreakthrough #NetZero #SustainableForces

The world is facing record breaking temperatures. But people experience heatwaves differently depending on where they live in cities, so it was great to see the Financial Times publish a letter from Dima Zogheib, our Nature Positive Design lead, on how we can best target solutions. We know nature can help cool down cities, but we need to distribute it well so everyone can enjoy access to it. Chief heat officers can play a key role in making that happen. #WeAreArup
Extreme heat is becoming more life threatening, and the Financial Times report on heat deaths was a timely reminder as we face the hottest summer on record. As we highlighted in our Arup Urban Heat Snapshot, this danger doesn’t affect everyone equally, so it’s vital we take action to protect the vulnerable populations most at risk in cities. I wrote to the FT about the action needed to keep cities liveable – including using AI and digital tools to model how our designs influence urban ‘hot spots’. To keep focus on the problem and galvanise this action, cities need to follow the examples of Athens, Dhaka, and others to appoint chief heat officers. It has been inspiring to work with Eleni (Lenio) Myrivili who has spearheaded action in Athens and globally to help build resilience to heat, so it is great to see her work and others reach a wider audience. #heatwave #urbanresilience #climateaction

🌊 Historic Partnership Launched to Transform Water Security in Lagos! 🌍 Today, the Lagos State government launched the Lagos Water Partnership (LWP), a groundbreaking initiative in collaboration with the Resilient Water Accelerator (RWA) that will safeguard its growth and enhance water security. This platform brings together investors, experts, and policymakers to address critical water security issues and enhance climate resilience in Lagos. Home to 20 million people and one of Africa’s fastest-growing cities, Lagos faces significant water and climate challenges. Despite its abundant water resources, only 10% of residents have access to municipal water, and the city is highly vulnerable to climate change impacts such as sea-level rise and flooding. The LWP aims to unlock new financing for essential climate-resilient water projects, including urban and rural water supply infrastructure and innovative sanitation facilities. This collaborative effort marks a major milestone in RWA’s mission to improve water management and access in vulnerable communities. We believe AI will be indispensable for decarbonising property, energy, transport, and other large-scale infrastructure, so it’s brilliant to see our Global Digital Leader Will Cavendish making the positive case for its use in The Guardian. #WeAreArup
There has been a lot of speculation about the energy needed to power AI and what this means for carbon emissions. But we need to think about this in the context of other sectors like construction and transport, which have emissions that far exceed what we can expect to see from AI. That’s before we even begin to consider the decarbonisation opportunities that AI will bring. In my sector – the built environment – we need it to help shift away from carbon intensive materials like concrete and to reduce emissions in transport, energy, and buildings. I wrote to The Guardian to explain why we need a shift in the debate in AI, and it’s great to see that message reaching a wider audience – we won’t solve the climate and nature crises without it. https://lnkd.in/eu8nZmDN Dan Allen Chiraag Amarnani Henry Brooke Ishani Bechoo Alice Nicholl Jen Workman Tom Wilcock Sankar V S Gideon D'Arcangelo Jingfeng Xu Pádraig Kenny Tristram Carfrae RDI Jerome Frost Tom Heath Rob Greig Tembi Hommes Pete Hannam Ramaseshan Kannan David David Fiona Cousins Erin McConahey, PE FASHRAE Amy Shen Caro Ames Matthew Price James Jarvis Jennifer DiMambro #wearup #ai #climateaction #sustainability

We’ve been named Category Winner, Professional Services, Engineering & Advisory, in the Australian Financial Review’s Sustainability Leaders List for helping to pioneer the use of sustainable concrete in construction and infrastructure. Concrete is integral for our roads, bridges, rail, and buildings. It also makes up nearly 9% of global greenhouse gas emissions. So we asked ourselves, how can we make it more sustainable? Working with clients and partners across the entire supply chain, we have helped develop new forms of sustainable concrete, and introduced these solutions to major infrastructure projects across Australia. The result? By using concrete alternatives in some of our projects, we have already delivered 50-80 per cent cement reduction using 10-20 per cent recycled material. Collaboration with clients and industry partners has also seen industry wide change – from product design and project application to influencing policy and industry standards.
