Work is progressing safely and according to plan towards the temporary sealing of Grosvenor Mine. This work is taking time as our priority is to ensure the safety of everyone on site while we stabilise the underground environment. A Queensland Mines Rescue Service GAG jet-engine is a key component of our incident response. The GAG is connected to a ventilation shaft on site and is sending inert gas into the mine. This high-pressure jet-engine generates large volumes of low-oxygen inert gas that will eventually extinguish the fire and make the atmosphere underground safe. The exhaust steam from the GAG is a mix of inert gas and water vapour. This high-tech machine is operated by the QMRS Mine Inertisation Unit, a specialist team of mine rescue personnel from coal mines across Queensland. The mines rescue response on display is a true testament to the spirit of teamwork and collaboration that exists in the mining industry. We offer our sincere appreciation to the team at the site, including QMRS, Resources Safety & Health Queensland and ISHRs who are supporting this response. All independent monitoring continues to report readings within acceptable limits, indicating no impact for community health from smoke or airborne contaminants. However, anyone concerned should seek medical advice. We acknowledge that this event may be causing uncertainty for the workforce and local community. We are actively collaborating with all four unions with a shared commitment to ensuring safety and stability at Grosvenor Mine and providing ongoing certainty for our workforce.

On Saturday, members of Real You, the LGBTQ+ colleague network for Anglo American and De Beers Group, proudly marched with InterEngineering at #PrideLondon. Paul Stanley, Co-Chair of Real You, looks back on the impact made within Anglo American and De Beers Group in the 6 years since its creation. "In that time we have hosted numerous events, raising awareness, understanding and empathy towards LGBTQ+ issues and heard the lived experiences of people inside and outside of our organisation. We have heard from countless colleagues how the company’s support allowed them to be themselves, and in some cases, come out to their colleagues (myself included) - lifting a huge weight and exhausting process of concealment to protect themselves. This year has seen further events and talks hosted by our Real You colleagues in Australia, South Africa and Botswana and the growth of our chapters in South America and membership from across the globe. I, for one, don’t want anyone past, present or future to feel they need to hide a major part of what makes them, them, at work. I hope our efforts can make our workplaces safe spaces for everyone." This year's theme focused on ‘Embracing Every Shade: Celebrating Diversity Together’ and our colleagues proudly marched to show support for the community and how we promote an inclusive and diverse environment throughout our business. Our Real You Network launched in 2018 and has since promoted a safe, inclusive and welcoming environment for LGBTQIA+ colleagues and allies at Anglo American and De Beers Group.

Today marks a new chapter for our iconic 47 on Main Street building as it is set to become the Wits Business School Centre for Entrepreneurship. The eight-floor,15 000 square metre building, will allow Wits Business School to launch the ‘Wits Crucible’ a state-of-the-art Centre for Entrepreneurship (CfE) and New Venture Creation, providing crucial business education, incubation, and acceleration services for youth and entrepreneurs in the Johannesburg inner-city. The Wits Crucible will provide four key units of entrepreneurship development support for youth, student entrepreneurs and Wits graduates. These will include a Development Unit to provide aspiring entrepreneurs with the skills to ideate, launch and grow a successful business. This handover not only proves the power of partnerships, but also supports South Africa’s national imperatives – education and job creation through entrepreneurship and will set up a new generation of young people for success. #EmpoweringFutureInnovators #47onMain

ICMM welcomes the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) Sector Guidance: Mining and Metals as an important step towards an economy that prioritises nature. As an official piloting partner for TNFD, we have been working with a range of partners to test and validate this guidance, supporting it to address nuances unique to mining and metals. Nature is at the 💚 of the global economy, yet it's disappearing at an alarming rate. A recent University of Oxford report suggests this crisis could cost the global economy upwards of $5 trillion. This is why the work of the TNFD is so important. TNFD provides companies and financial institutions with the tools and information needed to integrate nature-related decision making into their governance structures, strategic planning, risk management and disclosures. ICMM members committed to enhanced levels of disclosure 📊 on nature as part of the launch of our Nature Position Statement in January 2024. Shaped by experts and leaders from across ICMM members, as well as from civil society, academia, Indigenous representatives, and investor and disclosure bodies, the position statement outlines a 5-point plan for nature: 1. Protect and conserve pristine areas of our natural environment 2. Halt biodiversity loss at our operations 3. Collaborate across value chains 4. Restore and enhance landscapes 5. Catalyse wider change Learn more about the guidance and members' commitments here: https://lnkd.in/e9Brk6xG
