📈💰 Girls who have mentors receive career promotions five times more often! This is evidenced by a Gartner study. But how and where do you find a mentor? In June, the STEM is FEM team held a webinar, "Mentoring from A to Z", for members of our community and teacher platform. The communication manager of the project Mariia Bania, who went from a mentee to a mentor, shared her experience of effective work with mentors. “Conveying pain through simple, metaphorical ideas can help preserve the memory of events across generations”, — convinced architect and designer Elizaveta Feshchenko. On June 24, STEM is FEM and the Department of Public Communications of the KCSA held the event "How Kyiv will remember the Russian-Ukrainian war." The purpose of the event was to identify problems in the memorialization process and find ways to solve them. During the event, the experts discussed the current challenges and their own experience of working with memory. Then, there was a discussion in focus groups, which were attended by more than 50 guests. Among them were architects and urban planners, representatives from KCSA’s departments, public organizations, and charitable foundations, as well as relatives of fallen defenders. The discussion resulted in a list of problems and criteria for successful memorialization in Kyiv. This event is just the beginning of the project, as experts will work over the next months on developing an algorithm for preserving the memory of the Russian-Ukrainian war. We are proud to be involved in such an important project and to promote citizen participation in urban decision-making.

500 speakers from all over the world, and one of them is a representative of our project 😍 Alina Shcherbyna, Strategic Lead of STEM is FEM, attended Perspektywy Women in Tech 2024, the largest annual conference in Europe for women in STEM and Tech. She presented our STEM ecosystem to the international audience, shared the main challenges in fighting gender inequality in science and technology, and how our project overcomes them. Here are the most interesting insights from Alina's speech: 📌 Today, the community format is becoming more and more popular in the world. But most communities are for experienced professionals, not for young people who are just choosing their path in life. 📌 At the beginning of her career, Alina, like many women, lacked a role model of a successful woman, a mentor who’d support and guide her. That’s exactly the goal of the STEM is FEM ecosystem: to give girls support, new knowledge, and mentors who will share their experiences. 📌 By 2030, STEM is FEM plans to unite 10,000 young Ukrainian women. According to Alina, the foreign audience was interested in learning how Ukrainian projects like STEM is FEM work with young women. And many participants asked how they could become mentors for our girls. STEM is FEM shares its expertise and joins government initiatives. Recently, Elizaveta Korenko, head of STEM is FEM, became a member of the Ministry of Economy's working group on preparing proposals for implementing measures to close the gender pay gap. Such an initiative is extremely important during a full-scale invasion. As more men join the Armed Forces, strengthening the economic capacity of Ukrainian women is a matter of national security. Our team is encouraged to see the Ministry of Economy listening not only to government institutions or international organizations but also to businesses and non-governmental organizations that are actively fighting gender inequality. We’re grateful for the opportunity to participate in such important decisions, to work for Ukraine's interests, and to create better conditions for Ukrainian women.

"The best communication is the one that treats different people with respect," believes Mariia Bania, Communications Manager at STEM is FEM. She emphasizes that not only physical locations can be barrier-free. It's also about the proper pronouns for people from the LGBTQI+ community, the correct terms for people with disabilities, and inclusive visuals on the website. In the column for Wonderzine Ukraine, Mariia shared tips to make communication barrier-free. Here are some of them: — Involve people of different genders in projects. This scales the discussion and gives a broader view of the problem. — Use the right terms when talking about people with disabilities. For example, a person with Down syndrome or a person who uses a wheelchair. — Add subtitles to your videos on social media. There are many programs that can do this automatically. — Create an audio guide for at least some of the materials on your website so that people with visual impairments can learn about the activities of your project. This is a person who not only teaches subjects but also shares life experience with young people, supports and guides them. And we are creating a platform to improve the relationship between teachers and students and bring together professionals who are ready to find new ways and tools to work with youth.
