In a stark reminder of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, the United Nations Human Rights Monitoring Mission (HRMMU) has reported a significant increase in civilian casualties during May 2024. The numbers paint a grim picture of the war’s impact on non-combatants, with at least 174 civilians killed and 690 injured – the highest monthly toll since June 2023. Brooks Newmark, cofounder of Angels for Ukraine, visited Tytanovi Osteo-Integrative Prosthetics Clinic and Rehabilitation Center during his recent visit to Kyiv. Brooks met with patients, prosthetists, and medical professionals. He witnessed firsthand the resilience of individuals who had faced unimaginable challenges and the dedication of the clinic staff. Mr. Newmark had an open dialog with Oleksandr, who is wearing the latest prosthetic arm. The veteran told Brooks about the rehabilitation process and how he trained himself to operate a prosthesis freely. After that, the Angels for Ukraine cofounder met with Viacheslav Zaporozehts, the CEO of Tytanovi, and they discussed the current needs of the rehabilitation center and demobilized soldiers who are undergoing rehabilitation. As the conflict continues, the Tytanovi Center remains committed to its mission. With support from donors, it strives to empower war survivors by providing them with functional and aesthetically pleasing prosthetics. Brooks Newmark’s visit serves as a reminder that compassion and collaboration can make a tangible difference in the lives of those affected by war. #Ukraine #rehabilitation #veterans

On May 23, 2024, the Angels For Ukraine and the Kyiv Regional Mental Health Center signed a memorandum of understanding to collaborate on providing mental health services to Ukrainians impacted by the ongoing war with russia. The partnership aims to increase access to counseling, therapy, and support groups for those suffering from trauma, anxiety, depression and other mental health issues resulting from the war. Angels for Ukraine will help mobilize resources for the center to expand its services and capacity. "Having witnessed unspeakable horrors, many Ukrainians are understandably suffering from severe psychological trauma," said Raitis Bullits, cofounder of Angels for Ukraine. "This collaboration will allow us to provide the care and support they urgently require on a much wider scale." The partnership will prioritize aiding groups like children, soldiers, and veterans dealing with PTSD and those who have experienced violence, loss of loved ones, or destruction of their homes and communities. Mental health professionals from the center will also help train volunteers and staff from Angels for Ukraine and other organizations on trauma counseling and psychological first aid. The joint initiative underscores the increasing global recognition that the mental health crisis in Ukraine requires a massive humanitarian response. Both organizations lauded the memorandum as an important step in that effort. #MHPSS #Ukraine #support

This week in the Lviv region, our founders Raitis Bullits, Brooks Newmark, and Ihor Veretskyy visited an orphanage in Zhuravno village and the St. Panteleimon Regional Center of Complex Rehabilitation for children and people with disabilities in Stebnyk town. During the visit, plans for the future were discussed, including the development of institutions and their priority needs. Our team also looked for projects to which the fund could contribute. In Stebnyk, we discussed the possibility of purchasing new rehabilitation equipment and arranging a playground for children's leisure. In Zhuravno, we discussed the need to build a bomb shelter and how we can help get funding for this vital project.

During April 26-28, 2024, a three-day training for psychologists from educational institutions, the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, and medical facilities from various regions of Ukraine took place at the Natsionalny Hotel in Kyiv city. In total, 50 professional psychologists had the opportunity to get acquainted with new methods of providing psychological support, including the author's methodology of the lecturer – Ewa Dzieduszycka. The methodology consists of elements of proven therapies: EMDR, EFT, traditional Chinese medicine, and hypnosis. It aims to alleviate the discomfort caused by sudden or constant stress by restoring the autonomic nervous system. The peculiarity lies in the fact that it relies on the use of natural neurological connections, almost without words, and therefore does not require in-depth knowledge of psychology, but simply a certain sensitivity and ability for empathy. It is important to note that this method is not a therapeutic method in itself, but rather a tool to alleviate the psychological suffering associated with trauma. This tool is very effective in emergency situations to prevent the victim from "getting stuck" in trauma. It is also very effective at different stages of therapy when the patient is overwhelmed with emotions and cannot "express themselves". The application of this method helps to alleviate panic attacks, insomnia, overcome obsessive and even suicidal thoughts associated with trauma. It is especially interesting that its application does not require the use of many words, i.e., there are virtually no language barriers during the use of this methodology between the psychologist and the patient. The training "Neuropsychological Desensitization" received many positive reviews from professional psychologists of educational institutions, the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, and medical facilities from Donetsk, Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhia, Kirovohrad, Kyiv, Odesa, Sumy, and Chernihiv regions. Therefore, this major project to improve the skills of psychologists working in emergency services will continue in order to provide qualitatively new knowledge to as wide a range of professionals as possible. Angels For Ukraine CF is implementing a project to improve the skills of psychologists together with the All-Ukrainian League of Ukrainian Women. The "Neuropsychological Desensitization" training, which took place on April 26-28, 2024, was conducted with the financial support of Fondation privée Futur21.
