In an interview with #Bloomberg Businessweek, former U.S. President Donald Trump stated that #Taiwan should pay the U.S. for #defense, describing U.S. support for Taiwan as “no different than an insurance company.” The Republican presidential nominee also criticized Taiwan for taking away the U.S.’s #semiconductor business. Responding to Trump's comments, Taiwan’s Premier Cho Jung-tai said the two countries have good relations despite the lack of formal ties, and that Taiwan is willing to shoulder more responsibility for its security. #defense #trump #military #uselection #campaign

The Seoul International Book Fair (SIBF) has announced Taiwan as its guest of honor for 2025, marking Taiwan's fourth stint as a featured country at an international book fair, following #Bangkok in 2007 and 2018, and #Angoulême in 2012. Founded in 1954 and expanded to an international scale in 1995, Seoul International Book Fair (SIBF) has grown into South Korea's largest publishing event, and a key hub for Asia's rights sales. The fair also serves as a pivotal platform for collaboration between Taiwan and South Korea's publishing sectors, with Taiwanese companies keen on translating their works into #Korean for the local market. #Taiwan first participated in SIBF in 2008 with its "Taiwan Pavilion," something which continues to the present day, this year, featuring some 48 publishing houses and 336 books. #seoul #book #publishing #SIBF #seoulinternationalbookfair #guestofhonor #taiwanpavilion

Former U.S. President and Republican presidential candidate Donald #Trump has announced Ohio Senator J.D. Vance as his vice-presidential running mate. #Vance hails from the working-class town of Middletown, Ohio, and gained prominence in Silicon Valley for his memoir "Hillbilly Elegy." Regarding foreign policy, Vance advocates realism that prioritizes American interests. He has consistently expressed strong support for Taiwan, asserting that the U.S. should aid Taiwan in the event of a Chinese military invasion to raise the costs for China. Vance has also noted U.S. dependence on Taiwanese chip production, and in an interview last April, he stated, "If the Taiwanese fall to China, it will cause a great depression in this country." He has also called for increased U.S. weapons production to assist #Taiwan. #politics #uselection #uspolitics #foreignpolicy #usrelations #internationalrelations

The energy-intensive nature of the textile industry means that according to MIT’s ‘Emissions Reduction Through Innovation in the Textile Industry’ factsheet, it is responsible for between 5% - 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Recycling old clothes seems an obvious solution, but the problem here has long been the dye removal process, which is energy-intensive, uses a chemical solution that leaves behind toxic waste and can only succeed in removing 80% of original dye, greatly limiting the use of the recycled textiles. This is where Taiwan’s Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) has made a significant breakthrough. With the development of the ‘puretex sustainable decolorization solution,’ a game-changing 45% reduction in energy usage is achieved together with a 99% rate of original dye removal. This new solution is also compatible with older dye removal equipment, meaning no new investment barrier for businesses to adopt this technology. Watch the full report: https://lnkd.in/gnXb7e6z

In his article for the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, Ngeow Chow Bing highlights how a conflict in the Taiwan Strait could deeply affect Southeast Asia. He suggests that such a conflict could involve the Philippines directly and cause serious humanitarian and economic problems across the region. The article also suggests that Southeast Asian countries might team up with the US to defend their interests. This is because China could extend its actions beyond the Taiwan Strait into the South China Sea. It points out that the Philippines is important strategically because of where it is and its alliances with the US. For expert insights into how ASEAN countries are managing US-China relations, tune in to "Taiwan Talks," where scholars delve deep into the discussion. Trying to manage over 6000 employees, supervise research across dozens of disciplines and guide the technological development of a whole nation is no small challenge. Having spent thirty years working in the tech industry in the U.S., Edwin Liu decided to return to #Taiwan to take on this very challenge, becoming president of Taiwan’s Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI). While some of ITRI's research areas are beyond Liu's expertise, he believes that problem-solving skills are universally applicable across the scientific field and that the key for Taiwan’s technological future lies in having a clear roadmap for the way ahead.
