ABC has put black-ish back on its fall schedule, having previously earmarked Season 7 of the comedy for midseason. The fairly unprecedented move comes less than 24 hours after ABC announced its fall schedule.
The Kenya Barris-created series will air Wednesdays at 8:30/7:30c, leading into The Conners. With American Housewife in turn moving to 9:30, Kyra Sedgwick’s Call Your Mother comedy has been pushed to midseason.
Explaining the switcheroo, ABC Entertainment president Karey Burke said in a statement, “black-ish has a long-standing history of shining a light on current events and honoring Black voices through the lens of the Johnson family. After speaking with Kenya and our creative partners, we decided it was important to tell these meaningful stories during this moment in time, so we are adjusting our premiere schedule and are committed to doing whatever it takes to bring this series back as soon as we possibly can.
“Following recent monumental events, it’s imperative that the dialogue continues and empowers viewers to raise their voices,” Burke added, “and there is no other show that does that like black-ish.”
“We are incredibly grateful to Karey, Dana [Walden] and Peter [Rice] for recognizing the importance of black-ish in this moment and applaud them for making the necessary shifts to bring the show back as soon as possible,” said Barris. “While the last few months have felt overwhelming at times, they have also underscored just how important it is that Black voices are not only heard but empowered and amplified as well; and our entire black-ish team is humbled to be a small part of telling our stories and are excited to get back to these conversations.”
Change the Wednesday schedule
8pm: The Conners
8:30pm: The Goldbergs
9pm: Black-ish
9:30pm: American Housewife
Yeah I don’t know pm show. Your schedule is exactly right.
Or just keep Tuesday comedies as ABC has had better luck with comedies than dramas and right now we need more laughs.
That would have been great…then probably Schooled would’ve been given another shot and Mixedish wouldn’t have been held back til spring. I think the pandemic was partly to blame for the demise of Schooled, Single Parents and Bless this Mess.
Typical of Hollywood. Trying to cash in when they can.
They are a business. They don’t work for free and many companies jumps the issues bandwagon while selling their products. Do you work for free, no, right?
Sure. However, I really wondered why ABC would start a “new” show when it had an established one waiting in the wings. In a normal year, sure, I get that. But there are a ton of things that have to be put into place for a show to get up and running. Conversely, almost everything wrt cast and crew is already set on Black-ish. Why not start that asap, because it will be easier to get up an running even amid all the chaos of the covid impacted production season.
Lmao that’s like talking about Target selling swimsuits in the summer time like “typical of retail stores – trying to get cash from their customers when they can.”
LOL … well said Hannah.
Sad shows aren’t renewed because they’re good.
Nice save, ABC! There are Black and thriving families in this country and all of America needs to come to grips with it and get a life.
While I agree with your sentiment, I think it’s a bit much to assume all of America needs to come to grip with this idea. Many of us already understand it. Check out the news coverage of protests and you will see many people already get this. I also don’t think getting a life has anything to do with it.
Nice reaction to Bunker Boy saying he made Juneteenth a thing
I like all of the “ish” shows (Blackish, Mixedish, Grownish). I get why they may have wanted to wait to pair Blackish and Mixedish at midseason but they don’t need to be paired as no real crossover potential. I’ll take Tracee Ellis Ross and Jenifer Lewis on my screen anytime…
They have to rush it back so they can give us a whole lot of lecturing? I’ll pass.
Right? Because we haven’t had enough lecturing shoved down our throats in the past couple of weeks. Hard pass.
by the media and democrats they would have you think that most of the country is racist
Janice, and the media and Republicans have you thinking all Democrats are racist extremists. We need to stop the Republican vs. Democrat nonsense. Half of the reason our country is being ripped apart is because of this division we create among ourselves. I think most of us, Democrats and Republicans alike, are more moderate than extreme and would not have all of this bickering if it weren’t for people in positions of power egging it on, from both sides.
I like Blackish. I don’t think it usually has a lecturing tone.
You (and the next poster) have clearly never watched this show.
I watched Black-ish for the first 3 seasons or so, and loved it. And then Trump won, and it became insufferable. Too much lecturing, not enough comedy.
Pathetic. Kind of reverse discrimination – we cancelled you, but just because you’re African American we’re going to change our minds. Almost insulting. But I guess people are okay with this.
Was never cancelled.
They never canceled it. It was on deck for midseason to be paired with spinoff Mixedish. Perhaps utilize reading comprehension skills before going off in the comments acting like you know what’s up. But I guess you’re okay with this… level of incompetence. It’s almost certainly insulting to the rest of us.
Get off your Social Justice Warrior high horse and learn to read, you won’t look so fool-ish next time.
Anonymous, I see what you did there. :)
Wow, so much to unpack here. A lot of anger backed with no facts, it was never cancelled and in fact has been renewed for quite some time and finally, there is no such thing as “reverse discrimination”.
I would have prefered mixed ish in the post Goldbergs slot.
I think they would be better off leaving Wednesdays as is and putting Blackish/Mixedish on Sundays.
Sun:
AFHV
Who Wants to be a Millionaire?
Blackish
Mixedish
The Rookie
Save Supermarket Sweep for mid-season.
NOTHING AIRING CALIFORNIA A MESS
I almost wonder if ABC should’ve shelved American Housewife for midseason instead of Call Your Mother. Feels like a missed opportunity to finally pair The Connors with another multicam sitcom vs single cam.
I must say the whole camera business really means nothing to me personally. Not disrespecting your view, but I’m glad they kept American Housewife; for me, it and the Conner’s are ABC’s funniest comedies now that Mod Fam has retired.
I really think there are practical concerns here. It will be easier for returning shows to create new eps, than it will be for “new” shows. Returning shows have set writing rooms, casts, and crew. A new show has a lot to do to get up to speed production wise. It is probably smart to let the new shows back, because they can crank out a few eps quicker than a new show.
.
Plus, this lets ABC figure out the perfect spot to intro a new show.
I’m glad to hear this. I know for me one of the most important shows ever on black-ish was a few seasons ago when the family had to deal with their feelings, during Black Lives Matter demonstrations in LA. Really made me think about the whole issue as a white man.
This show 100% sucks anyone who likes Anthony Anderson must be cracking up with him making trash like this
What trash? How is it that? Anthony Anderson is a comedian and is very good @ it! He and the rest of the cast is laughing all the way to the bank, at foolish talk from people like you! Apparently the rest of TV audience likes the show, as it is still going strong! If you don’t like, don’t watch!
Looking at Black-ish’s live ratings, this show should be on Friday nights, it’s past it’s prime and very low rated. Not really sure if Black-ish will benefit out of The Conners, I like both shows but they obviously reach different audiences. Conners should have always been partnered with a multi-cam like “Call Your Mother” or “United We Fail”, while the “ish” shows should be on Friday.
I think that Blackish, as highly rated as it is, is still underrated.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a show that does as well as Blackish at teaching people without sounded preachy or like an educational special.
@Matt Webb Mitovich: any word if ABC is willing to FINALLY air the athletes kneeling episode of blackish that they shelved a while back?
That would of course be a major news story if it happens.
There is an episode from season 4 that was recently released on Hulu at the mid/end of August 2020. I havent seen it yet so not sure if that’s the one you’re referring to, but check that out. Might be that.
Did ABC executives ‘realize’ this or did they get an earful from lots of social media for their 2020 ignorance of the world we now live in. Just sayin’
Yes they are working 24/7
Blackish is a good show..but its time for a change..
The Baker an the Beauty is a cute show..Really hope its not cancelled..
It is cancelled by ABC. Yes, I agree it is a funny/heartwarming show reflecting the Latino community. This is what we need to see on TV, as nothing with violence or negativity. Hopefully a different network will pick up.
i thought Black-ish was a racist name but i guess not for the liberal ABC.
Joe,
I think you mean offensive (to you).
Racist means showing or feeling discrimination or prejudice against people of other races, or believing that a particular race is superior to another.
There is nothing about the title that suggests the superiority of any race.
How is it racist?
Here we go again with that “liberal” name calling nonsense. Until we can stop the back and forth bickering with liberal and conservative battling against each other, name calling, etc, then there will never be a happy medium in this country. What does name calling a network do for you? Does it make you feel better? Are you just as offended that Fox News airs much more conservative views? Are you angry that Fox tends to air more conservative shows? Or are you only mad at the networks you don’t watch because you don’t agree with them?
I know many people who wear their liberal “badge” with pride. Why would you consider the recognition of a proud political position, “name calling?”
Why only Black-ish? They should bring Mixed-ish back early as well. Both shows are relevant.
Bring back Bless This Mess!
I guess Mixed-ish is remaining Mid-season? The funny thing about trying to catch this zeitgeist, is that it’s not like any of these shows will be back on the air, anytime soon. By the time it comes back, we’ll probably be dealing with a new national chaos.
What time is Whitish on? Oops be Careful you can’t use that word.
they done a few shows about politics. people talk like it is every episode. Americans really are uncomfortable with even little talk about race. reality this show should go to cable. then networks very bland watching paint dry tim allen type shows.
