The Bachelorette is breaking up ABC‘s Tuesday-night comedy block.
The Alphabet network unveiled its new fall lineup on Wednesday (the last of the five broadcast nets to do so), and the key headline is that the latest season of The Bachelorette — bumped from summer due to the coronavirus pandemic — will replace ABC’s traditional two-hour sitcom lineup on Tuesday. This marks the first fall schedule in 10 years that ABC will not have any sitcoms on Tuesday.
What does the tectonic shift mean for your favorite comedies? Answers below!
♦ Ex-Tuesday staple The Conners shifts to Wednesdays at 9 pm (aka the Modern Family legacy slot). The Goldbergs will continue to kick off Wednesdays, with American Housewife following it at 9:30 pm.
♦ David E. Kelley’s new drama Big Sky will occupy ABC’s famously challenging Tuesday-at-10 pm death slot (following The Bachelorette). Meanwhile, sitcom siblings black-ish and mixed-ish have been pushed to midseason. UPDATE: ABC rushes black-ish back onto the fall schedule.
♦ Leslie Jones’ Supermarket Sweep reboot will replace Tiffany Haddish’s cancelled Kids Say the Darndest Things reboot Sundays at 8 pm, leading into Season 2 of Jimmy Kimmel’s reboot of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.
♦ Specific premiere dates will be announced at a later date, but it’s safe to say ABC’s fall launch will take place later than usual (i.e. not in September) due to COVID-19.

Wow. Streaming services seem to get all of the good new shows, while network TV gets crappier by the season. Sitcoms seem to be dropping like flies. ABC has always had a sitcom heavy schedule, and we need that type of escapism more than ever now. So sad to see they basically have ONLY a 2 hour block of them left. :(
I think this is pandemic related, with a soupcon of problems relating to the Disney – Fox merger. There was just too much going on for them to get their sitcom slate correct. I think they will sit on the scripts they have, and try to get them right for NEXT year.
.
ABC seems to only have done hold overs for next season, with only a few big name new shows. This is because they are likely to not shoot any new eps, of anything, until late fall, if not early winter. We won’t have a new slate of fresh eps until January, so Disney can do shortened seasons of all its shows (15+, so nothing to sneeze at), and still run new eps from January until May. They can do all this while getting their slate of shows ready for next year.
.
This is just a crazy year, for a bunch of reasons.
As a sitcom fan, I hope you are right, and the networks don’t start showing nothing but cheaper to produce reality and game shows. I have a feeling sitcoms may get moved to paid streaming services, like what happened with The Orville. (Yes, not a sitcom, but almost one.)
My 2 loves are sitcoms and genre shows, and neither lasts too long these days.
Its partially on ABC. They do a garbage job on scheduling and the shows suffer because of it, then ABC acts shocked and cancels the shows when they do poorly.
True
Well, that may be true, but I have a hard time with them expecting 80 hits with the same characters/staff. (I miss “Schooled” & think there should be a maximum of 1 show per network with a title including/ending-in “ish”.
I think it’s crap because I loved The baker and the beauty!!! I just don’t understand why it got canceled!!!
for all of their line up of scheduled shows, I see only three that I would watch and only on delayed next day viewing. It seems like ABC won’t be killing it in the ratings department this season.
I’m so excited for Grey’s Anatomy! I hope they adress the coronavirus crisis…
No thanks, we’re living it right now. Besides the Grey’s Anatomy doctors are surgeons. Covid is an infectious disease and nurses and ER doctors are on the front lines of that. You don’t need an OR to intubate and pump antibiotics and fluids.
Yeah, but you forgot about the pit & the clinic.
Still only The Good Doctor and The Rookie for me on this lineup – might sample Big Sky but meh
Where is United We Fall? Is it going air in late summer?
Seriously! I was thinking it would premiere in the fall, I wonder if the sitcom came out “really bad”.
Too many shows on TV nowadays. Good shows get cancelled early now instead of revamped and given a second chance. Case in point. Grand Hotel, Reef Break, kids say the Darndest things, and Emergence. These shows were my favorites on this network .
It could become a lost show. (shot but not aired) But with not much else in the pipeline I am also surprised ABC seems to have ‘forgotten’ about this show.
Still holding out hope for The Brides and Harlem’s Kitchen to lock in series orders.
Thank goodness for streaming.
ABC seems to be losing its lustre??!
Only ones I will be watching: Stumptown (best new show last year) and Rookie (love Nathan Fillion but they aren’t rookies now and the writers will be under some pressure to change cop shows). I will miss Bless This Mess, Single Parents, AoS, and the Baker/Beauty.
FYI: The rookies technically have 30 days left, and the EP told me that may stretch out over Season 3. –Mgmt.
What happened to United We Fall?
It had an hourlong premiere, which apparently earned decent-enough ratings to justify repeating the entire thing.
To be fair, the title warned you.
Here’s to hoping that some of the likely impending changes include making the police shows which do continue at least passably realistic from a professional purview standpoint. The rookies may still have 30 days left at that designation/rank, but they certainly don’t act like it. There are, of course, more important changes which also ought to be made (e.g. rectifying/abandoning the “hero cop” trope). No, not every show needs to mimic The Wire, but even so-called “light procedurals” need to/would benefit from reality checks.
If you don’t like it the way it is, don’t watch it.
How terribly clever and novel. One can watch a program and enjoy certain elements while still acknowledging other aspects to be found wanting. There is a spectrum between servile flattery and unadulterated hate.
If you do not like my comments the way they are, do not read them.
The Rookie literally left off on a cliffhanger regarding a bad cop on the take with a cartel.
Bless This Mess was the only ray of enjoyment and creativity and humor on this last fall. We loved it ~ so naturally they cancelled it ~ bad move ABC
Stumptown and A Million Little Things are all I watch on ABC. Will probably check out Big Sky.
as far as I am concerned. black ash could never come – talk about being racist. yes this is
Amen!
So, you don’t actually know what the word racist means. Got it.
How arrogant of you -look it up in the dictionary
Black ash???? If you’re gonna insult a show, at least proofread or at least spell it correctly……
not worth the effort
Yes, I agree w/you at least spell correctly !
Black-ish is held back for midseason.
It’s certainly not racist, and I really don’t know how you came up to that conclusion.
I just saw a boomer Karen
So a show that deals with racial and social issues that from a Black prospective is racist? How ridiculous!!
Black View Points Matter.
Looks like the comedy night is the only one I’ll be watching!
I really hope that, at least in the first episode, Leslie Jones is wearing a Dave Ruprecht style colorful sweater. *crosses fingers* Really looking forward to this. I hope the dropping of comedy blocks has more to do with covid than as a permanent feature.
very underwhelming ABC
Any word on how many episodes “The Conners” will have in season 3?
I may be wrong, but this seems to be a very “white” lineup
Who cares what color anyone is. You are the racist punk.
Well, I will officially watch one thing total on ABC–daytime and night-time combined. I used to watch all four ABC soaps (Ryan’s Hope 4Ever) and a lot of their prime-time shows. Now? A Million Little Things is going to be it this fall.
I was hoping they were going to axe Wednesday comedies since they cancelled/ended 3 comedies and because it is on the same time as NBC’s Chicago shows.
So ABC pushed back Black-ish and Mixed-ish to mid-season to make room in the fall for comedies with white families on their Wednesday. :(
If it quacks like a duck, it is a duck. Also found this change very interesting. ABC continues to slide down a slippery slope. Is it funny that the two shows with Hispanic characters that were good, Grand Hotel and The Baker and the Beauty, were also cancelled by ABC? What’s up with that?
So they were not racist enough to produce not one but TWO Hispanic-themed shows but the racist to cancel them? And where does ‘The George Lopez Show’ or ‘Ugly Betty’ fit in to all this supposed anti-Latino racism at ABC?
Grande hotel and the Baker and the Beauty were my favorites. Has nothing to do with Hispanic characters. Just GREAT shows!!
I am so upset about this! Blackish does such an amazing job with complicated race issues. I’ve been saying for weeks I couldn’t wait to see their new season
For me fall schedule
MONDAY
10 pm The Good Doctor
TUESDAY
10 pm BIG SKY
WEDNESDAY
9:30 pm CALL YOUR MOTHER
10 pm Stumptown
THURSDAY
8 pm Station 19
10 pm A Million Little Things
Mid-season
Mixed-ish
İ only have few show because they cancelled The Baker and the Beauty, Bless This Mess, Emergence, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D and Single Parents
ABC has not had success with Tuesday 10 PM drama. Every year they keep cancelling a new show after 1 season
Looking at the schedule, I realize I have no shows on ABC I like anymore. The Good Doctor lost me last season. Grey’s lost me several seasons ago. Station 19 has become a satellite of Grey’s. Single Parents and How to Get Away with Murder are gone. I’ll check out Big Sky because I like Kylie Bunbury and Kanthryn Winnick and I generally like David E. Kelly. But that is all I got.
I was really hoping Mixedish got the post Goldberg slot.
My preference would have been to keep Schooled there – but since that got cancelled, mixed-ish was my next choice as well :(
They both have the 80’s retro thing going … its a missed opportunity.
I was actually kinda suprised they dropped Schooled, Bless this Mess and Single Parents. I figured they were going to keep at least 2 if them.
Single parents was so good!! It was hilarious! I’m really upset with abc over this one!
It did not do well in the ratings. It would have been bad business to renew it.
Maybe change the time slot!
Yeah, canceling ‘Single Parents’ is the biggest mistake of this TV season.
I see that 100000 Pyramid is scheduled for mid season. I know they were originally supposed to film this season in April but were postponed due to the Covid quarantine. Are these mid season episodes going to be taped this year or is ABC going to hold off until next April 2021?
Filming is tentatively set for August but we’ll see what happens…
Did I miss something or was Match Game left off the schedule renewal and cancelled lists?
Match Game is currently airing as part of the summer schedule, and those shows (also Celebrity Family Feud, To Tell the Truth, etc.) were not included. Card Sharks and $100,000 Pyramid are included because they were not able to film seasons before shutdowns, so their renewals are actually part of what was meant for this summer. While I can’t promise it will be renewed, there is nothing out of the ordinary with it being left off at this time as all summer shows currently airing are in the same boat.
You cancel all the good shows. Never giving them a chance. Grand Hotel and the beauty and the baker were great shows. Try letting the people pick what’s on t.v You leave us with cliffhangers and just cancel like that and never finish the storylines. I am not going to get involved in any more new shows because you always take it off after one season.
