Can You Build a Kratom Tolerance? And How Can it be Reset?

Kratom capsules and leaf

In the world of kratom, a big topic tends to be tolerance. Can you build a tolerance to kratom, needing more and more of the plant in order to reap its benefits? If so, can you reset it to factory settings? We’ve got the answers for you here.

First off, always keep in mind that everyone responds to kratom differently, as with most any botanical out there. While some may only need half a gram to get their desired results, others may find they need a higher dosage amount. The same goes with tolerance levels. While some kratom enthusiasts will rarely, if ever, need to change the amount they take in order to produce the desired effects, others say they have in fact had to up their dosage. Also worth noting is if people are benefitting from the plant’s energizing properties, a smaller dose is typically taken. If looking for more of a calming effect, kratom consumers typically take more of the herb. The average serving is about 2.5 grams, but again this is based on averages.

Kratom Tolerance Defined, & What You Can do About It

It’s typically true, as with most botanicals, that if you’re benefiting from kratom on a very regular basis, chances are you will need more with time in order to produce the same desired effects as your first dose. This is referred to as building a “tolerance” to the herb. It’s also referred to as “Stagnant Strain Syndrome.”

One major component in combating tolerance issues is switching up your strains. If you’re taking kratom throughout the day, chances are you might already be doing this. Typically the effects of green and white strains are energizing, so you might find yourself taking these strains in the morning for an energizing boost. When you’re ready to call it a day, relax and unwind, red strains will likely be your friend. If you’re willing to try different strains to add variety to your day, that’s great, as tolerance will be less likely to become an issue for you. To figure out which strains may be best for your personal needs, take a look at this guide to various kratom strains.

There are different stages of Stagnant Strain Syndrome, with the first typically being what keeps enthusiasts coming back. You feel great, and think you’ve found that sweet spot…but then reality sets in and that ½ a gram or other starting dose just isn’t doing what it used to do for you. This brings us to the next stage, when you slowly increase your dosage to find your sweet spot, which is where you’ll want to set your focus at. It’s here that you will know which dosage seems to work best for you. Once you start feeling like you need even more (it’s never recommended to take more than five grams per 24 hour period, or two servings).

Keep in mind that most kratom lovers, at some point or another, are going to have days that just don’t seem to give the desired effect. Just remember that’s perfectly normal!

Avoiding Tolerance Issues & Scheduling

In a perfect world, tolerance wouldn’t exist. If 2020 hasn’t proven that there’s no such thing as a perfect world, I am not sure what will! But we’ve got you covered. Let’s get into avoiding building an undesirable tolerance, and what you can do about if you have.

You’re going to want to start keeping a diary of when you are taking each dose, as well as the strain used. Once you’ve done this for about a week, give or take, you should have a good idea of the strains that are benefitting you most, day and night. As mentioned earlier, usually energetic strains such as green and white vein kratom are most popular for daytime, while red veined kratom strains may help ease you into a peaceful night. However, there are exceptions to the rule and you may want to try a sample pack in order to figure out what works best for your individual needs.

Switching up your strains is perhaps the best way to avoid building a tolerance to kratom. You can also choose to change strains on throughout the week, or on a weekly basis. For example, if you typically make a morning smoothie using green kratom, try adding white instead the next week. Or if you’re feeling extra creative, why not try making your own blend? This will also be helpful in reducing the chance of building a tolerance.

Once you’ve discovered the best kratom schedule that aligns with your needs, follow it! You will likely find different strains and blends will give you the desired effects that you started enjoying kratom for in the first place. Namaste.
