Recently, residents of the Grand Duchy have reported an increase in the amount of spam calls from Luxembourg phone numbers.

The scammers use this method to attempt to steal personal data.

A reader recently contacted RTL to warn of these scam attempts, after receiving a phone call from a Luxembourgish phone number which purported to be from the international police agency Europol.

The scam uses caller ID spoofing to make it seem as though the phone call is coming from Luxembourg, thereby seeking to appear legitimate.

Police recommend hanging up as soon as possible if you should receive such a phone call, and advise people to never share any personal details over the phone. Any phone call demanding a quick reaction should automatically raise suspicion.

If in doubt, always contact the relevant authority or institution directly to query the issue and to check if the phone call was a scam. Always check phone bills for irregularities.

If you fall victim to such a scam please contact the police immediately.
