Raising Olives in Provence: A Guide for Body and Soul Paperback – December 12, 2023
Purchase options and add-ons
Americans have long had a love affair with Provence: its glamour, its mystique, its foreignness. But never have they had a guide like Ken Timmerman. Bursting with humorous stories about local characters and vivid description of French landscapes and customs gleaned from thirty-five years in the country, Raising Olives in Provence tells the story of how the author improbably came to renovate a run-down house and raise olive trees in the hills above Saint-Tropez. From olive presses to truffle markets, from Templar hostelries to lunch at a beachside club with the king and queen of Sweden, Timmerman takes us to places and introduces us to people we would never find on our own.
In his other life as a war correspondent and investigative reporter, Timmerman deals with the horrors and betrayals of a world gone mad, always returning to this hillside in the south of France as a refuge. But even here, intrigue and treachery lie just beneath the surface, along with mysterious visitors on the hillside, an olive thief, phony artists and wannabe aristocrats, and the endless love adventures of his French neighbors.
Love, faith, marriage, and friendship—with a sprinkling of salt, thyme, and some olive oil, please! And don’t forget the rosé.

My first Middle East reporting trip took me to Beirut in July 1982, and I've been going back ever since. I've lived in Egypt and Lebanon, have worked with freedom fighters in Iran and Iraq, and been held hostage by Muslim terrorists in a war zone. All of that is the subject of my latest book, And the Rest Is History.
My forthcoming book, Raising Olives in Provence, is a change of pace, a laugh-out-loud account of the south of France from someone who has gotten to know the region and its people intimately over the past twenty years.

But, you say, Raising Olives in Provence is
a very unpolitical bit of prose praising the simple life in an idyllic setting in a famous region of France known for its diverse pleasures. It is not an edgy geopolitical treatise. You are correct, but the talent it takes to produce the latter allows Ken the wordsmith skills to infuse a simple narrative about a country villa growing grapes and olives with a highly-nuanced, true story about values, nature, simple pleasures and the amusing vagaries of the local denizens. It is, also, intermittently spiced with teasing allusions to Ken’s unprecedented experience in the arena of international intrigue. Not too much. Just enough to make the reader more curious about why this particular piece of Eden is really such a metaphor for a complex soul that has examined the Real World in which we all exist. There is a subtle and rather important message that the careful reader will extrude from the light and airy narrative.
I took a break from my heavy reading of political and geopolitical works to refresh my
spirit a bit. I even read RAISING OLIVES aloud to my wife. It delighted both of us. She thrilled to the anecdotal comments of, to and about Christina (a remarkable Swedish woman in her own right) and I in reading about a version of my own unfulfilled dream.
I recognized the small added flavoring from his life story. I did only a tiny portion of what
Ken Timmerman has done, but understand his story well and know why he needed his own Special Place to record the experiential treasure stored in his mind.
My wife and I, as well as any who read this remarkable work, will walk right alongside Ken as he traverses his own Edenic Garden and learn why it thrills him to the core of his soul…and Christina who said, “Buy this for me, please” in that way only a wise Swedish wife can do for her world savvy husband.
Great read. Buy and take a short and refreshing mental vacation.
