Hardik Pandya goes past MS Dhoni to achieve this T20 World Cup record for India

NEW DELHI: Hardik Pandya's unbeaten half-century against Bangladesh in the Super 8 match of the 2024 ICC Men's T20 World Cup proved his mettle as a finisher and his ability to anchor the innings in high-pressure situations.

Pandya's knock not only boosted India's total but also marked a significant personal milestone, surpassing MS Dhoni's record for the highest score by an Indian batting at number six in a T20 World Cup match.

By surpassing MS Dhoni's highest score of 45, a record unchallenged since the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007 and later equalled by Suresh Raina in 2012, Pandya established a new benchmark for Indian batsmen at number six in T20 World Cup history.

On a challenging pitch where most batsmen struggled to find their rhythm, Pandya's composed and aggressive approach helped India reach a formidable total of 196 for 5.

Pandya's innings of 50 not out off 27 balls was a blend of power and precision, featuring five boundaries and three towering sixes. His strategic placement and aggressive stroke play ensured a steady flow of runs, even as wickets fell around him.


The Indian innings had a shaky start with captain Rohit Sharma falling early for 23. Contributions from Virat Kohli (37), Rishabh Pant (36), and Shivam Dube (34) laid a foundation, but it was Pandya's explosive finish that set Bangladesh a challenging target.

Bangladesh's bowlers had mixed fortunes. Tanzim Hasan Sakib was the pick of the bowlers, claiming two crucial wickets and maintaining an economy of 8.00. Rishad Hossain also impressed with figures of 2 for 43. Despite their efforts, Pandya's onslaught in the final overs tilted the game in India's favour.

The match, held at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, witnessed Bangladesh winning the toss and opting to bowl. However, Pandya's innings ensured that India posted a competitive total, not only solidifying India's position in the Super 8 but also showcasing his capability to finish games and anchor innings in high-pressure scenarios.
