NEW DELHI: Indra Hang Subba of the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) has emerged victorious in Sikkim's lone Lok Sabha seat, defeating his closest rival Bharat Basnett of the Citizen Action Party (CAP-Sikkim) by a staggering margin of 80,830 votes. The 35-year-old incumbent MP secured 164,396 votes, while Basnett managed to garner 83,566 votes.
After the win, SKM chief PS Tamang expressed his congratulations to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).He stated on X, "Congratulations to the Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi Ji and the NDA on their remarkable victory in the 18th Lok Sabha elections. The Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) Party fully supports the NDA for the development and prosperity of our country."

The Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) candidate PD Rai finished third with 77,171 votes. Interestingly, the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) Dinesh Chandra Nepal came in fifth with 19,035 votes, trailing behind independent candidate Laten Tshering Sherpa, who secured 21,263 votes.

The Lok Sabha election for Sikkim's parliamentary constituency and the elections for 32 assembly seats were held on April 19. Demonstrating significant political strength, the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha returned to power in the Himalayan state for the second consecutive term, winning 31 out of the 32 assembly seats.
With this victory, Indra Hang Subba and the SKM aim to continue their focus on the development and prosperity of Sikkim, aligning their goals with the broader vision of the NDA government at the center.

Sikkim, the northeastern Indian state bordered by China, Bhutan, Nepal, and West Bengal, is the least populous and second-smallest state in India. Since its accession to the Indian Union in 1975, Sikkim has been an active participant in the country’s electoral process. The state held its inaugural general elections in 1977, during which Chatra Bahadur Chhetri of the Indian National Congress was elected unopposed as the first Member of Parliament (MP). Currently, Indra Hang Subba, who has served since 2019, represents Sikkim in the Lok Sabha, with his term concluding in May 2024.
The 2019 general elections in Sikkim saw Indra Hang Subba of the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) winning with 166,922 votes, representing 47.23% of the vote share. He was followed by Dek Bahadur Katwal of the Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) with 154,489 votes (43.71%), and BJP’s Laten Tshering Sherpa with 16,572 votes (4.69%). In the previous 2014 elections, SDF’s Prem Das Rai secured 163,698 votes (52.98%), defeating SKM’s Tek Nath Dhakal who received 121,956 votes (39.47%).

The election for the Sikkim seat in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections was conducted on April 19, 2024, during the first phase of voting. The voter turnout was notable at 79.88%, reflecting the high engagement of Sikkim's electorate.
