NEW DELHI: Shiv Sena leader Rajesh Shah's son Mihir Shah was arrested on Tuesday, three days after his BMW rammed into a couple's bike in Mumbai killing a woman.
According to a police official, Shah was arrested near Mumbai. His mother and two sisters are being questioned in the case, the police said.
Mumbai court extended the police custody of Shiv Sena leader's driver Rajrishi Bidawat till July 11.
Questioning the delay in arrest, former home minister Anil Deshmukh said, “To ascertain whether he was drunk while driving the blood sample needs to be taken within 5-6 hours of the incident. He is charged for negligent driving but now cannot be charged for drunken driving. Was there a plan to enable him to escape the blood test?”
Six police teams had been deployed to arrest the 24-year-old following the fatal accident.
Kaveri Nakhwa, the 45-year-old woman who died in the accident, and her husband Pradip, were riding back on their scooter after purchasing wholesale fish near Crawford Market.
According to the police, the couple was hit on Dr Annie Besant Road, with both landing on the car's bonnet. The BMW accelerated with them still on it. The injured husband searched for his wife but couldn't find her. She was later discovered near the Worli-end of the sea link, about 2 kilometers from the accident site. She was rushed to Nair Hospital, Mumbai Central, where she was pronounced dead upon arrival.
The car was registered under Mihir's father's name, and its insurance lapsed in May.
Rajesh Shah serves as a Shiv Sena representative from Palghar within the faction led by chief minister Eknath Shinde.
Chief minister Eknath Shinde had assured that everyone involved in the hit-and-run case would face consequences, emphasizing that all individuals would be treated equally under the law, irrespective of their status or political allegiance.
