Filmmaker Ramesh Sippy recently disclosed that while fans associate Hema Malini with the iconic dual role in 'Seeta Aur Geeta', she wasn't originally the first choice for the film.
During his discussion with Arbaaz Khan on Bollywood Bubble, Ramesh Sippy revealed that veteran actor Mumtaz was initially considered for the roles of Seeta and Geeta in the film.
He mentioned having worked with her before and appreciated her enthusiasm for the project, but due to her busy schedule, they couldn't wait for her availability.
Despite the director's confidence in Hema for the role, the film's writers Salim-Javed initially had reservations about her suitability. Sippy recalled their doubts, particularly regarding whether Hema could embody the character of Geeta as convincingly as Seeta. He had previously directed Hema in his debut film Andaz in 1971 and later collaborated with her in the iconic Sholay.

Seeta Aur Geeta also starred Dharmendra, Sanjeev Kumar, Roopesh Kumar, Manorama, Satyen Kappu, Honey Irani, and Pratima Devi. The plot centered on identical twins portrayed by Hema Malini, separated at birth and raised with contrasting personalities. Upon reuniting as adults, they switch identities. Dharmendra and Sanjeev Kumar played their love interests. The film was a blockbuster success and inspired remakes in multiple languages.
