Nashik: The Maharashtra Natural Gas Limited (MNGL) will support th MUHS’ Gene Health Lab in Shivajinagar, Pune, under the corporate social responsibility.
MUHS Vice-Chancellor, Lieutenant General Dr Madhuri Kanitkar (retd), said the lab has been set up to enable economically weaker sections of society to get tested for health problems like down’s syndrome, thalassemia, cystic fibrosis, sickle-cell anaemia, breast cancer and leukaemia at a minimal cost.

MNGL have decided tp extend the support under CSR to Gene Health Lab for procuring new ‘state-of-the-art’ equipment to scale up operations and increase the number of genomic tests for underprivileged.
The registrar of the university Dr Rajendra Bangal said govt’s Mahatma Phule Janarogya Yojana (MJPJAY) included treatment and hospitalization of patients and they were hoping to get more diagnostic tests included in this plan. Many scientists and doctors from several hospitals such as Tata Cancer Hospital in Mumbai and Sassoon Hospital in Pune would volunteer to help and counsel the patients, said a release from the MUHS.
Gene Health Lab’s Oncology tests would be supervised by Dr Anuradha Chougule, a veteran researcher and consultant from Tata Memorial Hospital. MUHS aimed to expand availability of these tests to other govt hospitals across Maharashtra.
