India constructing road from Jalpaiguri to Doklam
Jalpaiguri: India is constructing a new road from Jalpaiguri to Doklam along the India-China border, which had witnessed a stand-off between Indian and Chinese troops in 2017 over the construction of a road by the latter. The new 179-km road from Khunia More in Jalpaiguri to Doklam in Sikkim via Naxal, Jhalong, Paren, Todey, Tangta, Aritar, Rangli, Zuluk, Nathang Valley, Kupup and Jelep La will be an alternative to the current road alignment, a considerable segment of which passes through Bhutan.
Sources said once the new road is operational, it will reduce travel time to Sikkim and Doklam and allow better logistical movement for defence vehicles.
After commencing work on the road to Nathu La from Oodlabari in Jalpaiguri (NH 717A), the National Highway & Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd has started laying the new all-weather road to connect NH 31C to Doklam.
This new road starts from Khunia More off the NH 31C in Jalpaiguri near Gorumara National Park and passes by the Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary. It enters Kalimpong district at Kumai.
Construction work has begun till Naxal near Jhalong, after which the road will pass through Jhalong, Todey-Tangta, before reaching Aritar, where it will meet NH 77A. From Aritar, this road will take a turn to reach Zuluk, Nathang, Kupup, Jelep La and finally, Doklam. “There already exists a service road to Doklam from Jelep La for exclusive use by the Army. This new road from Khunia More will meet that. However, the DPR for the upper reaches of the road is yet to be made. It might take another four to five months to do that. Meanwhile, the NHIDCL has started construction work up to Naxal,” a senior administrative official told TOI.
