Kaal Sarpa Dosha and Remedies as per Astrology
In Vedic astrology, Kaal Sarpa Dosha is a planetary configuration believed to significantly and negatively impact an individual’s life. It occurs when all seven major planets, the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn are positioned between Rahu and Ketu—that is, the north and south lunar nodes respectively.
Rahu and Ketu are often referred to as shadow planets.
They represent the points where the moon’s orbit intersects the apparent paths of the sun. When these nodes form an axis with all other planets falling on one side, it creates the Kaal Sarpa Dosha. This alignment is thought to resemble a serpent, hence the titular ‘Sarpa,’
swallowing time, hence the titular ‘Kaal.’ The formation of Kaal Sarpa Dosha can vary in intensity. A full Kaal Sarpa Dosha occurs when all planets are strictly between Rahu and Ketu.
Partial Kaal Sarpa Yoga occurs when one or more planets fall outside this axis, resulting in milder effects. For example, when Mars and Saturn, considered to be inauspicious planets, are positioned on the opposite side of Rahu and Ketu. The effects of this aspect is not as terrible as a complete Kaal Sarpa Yoga.
It is associated with various challenges, including delays in achievement and financial instability and even the fear of looming death. It is categorised into twelve categories: Anant, Kulik, Vasuki, Shankhapal, Padma, Maha Padma, Takshak, Karkotak Shankhachoodh, Ghatak, Vishdhara, Sheshnag. All these types depend on the positioning of Rahu and Ketu and have different but negative effects, from loss of property or marital problems.
To lighten the effects of this yoga, those affected are often prescribed these remedies:
  1. Performing Kaal Sarpa Shanti Puja, a ritual to appease the cosmic ‘serpent.
  2. Worshipping Lord Shiva, particularly on Mondays and during Shravan month.
  3. Reciting Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra daily.
  4. Practicing meditation and yoga to balance mental and spiritual energies.
  5. Offering prayers at Naga serpent temples.
  6. Wearing gemstones associated with benefic planets in one’s chart.
  7. Engaging in charitable activities, especially related to snake conservation.

For further help, individuals are recommended to consult psychologist as this aspect is considered to be more malefic than any other kind of yoga, or dosha, in Vedic astrology.
