Delhi minister Atishi's fast enters 2nd day as politics over water crisis intensifies

NEW DELHI: Delhi minister Atishi continued her indefinite fast into the second day on Saturday, demanding more water from Haryana to resolve the water crisis affecting 28 lakh residents of the national capital.
Atishi said, she would not eat anything until Haryana releases more water into the Yamuna to meet Delhi's needs.
She began her indefinite fast on Friday, accusing Haryana of with holding Delhi's rightful share of water from the Yamuna. She conveyed her message through a video from her 'Jal Satyagrah' venue in Bhogal, South Delhi.
"One MGD water provides for 28,000 people. Shortage of 100 MGD water means 28 lakh people are not getting water in Delhi," Atishi said.
The minister highlighted that Delhi relies on neighboring states for its water supply, which comes through rivers and canals, with Haryana providing a significant portion.
She detailed that Delhi receives 1,005 million gallons of water per day (MGD) from neighboring states, with Haryana contributing 613 MGD.
However, due to the extreme summer heat, Haryana has recently reduced its water share to Delhi to 513 MGD, impacting over 28 lakh residents.
In her statement, Atishi emphasized the urgency of the situation: "Shortage of 100 MGD water means 28 lakh people are not getting water in Delhi."
Delhi's dependency on Haryana and other neighboring states for water underscores the critical nature of this issue, especially during the summer months.
Atishi's fast aims to push for a resolution to alleviate the severe water shortage affecting the residents of Delhi.
