The Amex Platinum is unmatched when it comes to travel perks and benefits. If lounge access, hotel elite status and annual statement credits are important to you, this card is well worth the high annual fee. Read our full review of the Platinum Card from American Express.

Pros

  • The Amex Platinum usually comes with a lucrative welcome offer
  • Access to Centurion Lounges, complimentary elite status with Hilton and Marriott, more than $1,400 in assorted annual statement credits and more (enrollment required)
  • The Amex Platinum also comes with access to a premium concierge service that can help you with everything from booking hard-to-get reservations to finding destination guides to help you plan out your next getaway

Cons

  • The $695 annual fee is only worth it if you’re taking full advantage of the card’s benefits. Those who don't travel frequently may not get enough value to warrant the cost
  • Outside of the current welcome bonus, you’re only earning bonus rewards on specific airfare and hotel purchases, so it’s not a great card for other spending categories
  • The annual airline fee credit and other monthly statement credits can be complicated to take advantage of compared to the broader travel credits offered by competing premium cards
  • Earn 80,000 Membership Rewards® Points after you spend $8,000 on eligible purchases on your new Card in your first 6 months of Card Membership. Apply and select your preferred metal Card design: classic Platinum, Platinum x Kehinde Wiley, or Platinum x Julie Mehretu.

The Delta SkyMiles Gold Amex offers great airline-specific perks and travel benefits without a high annual fee, which makes it great for new travelers and casual Delta flyers.

“As someone who likes flying Delta but doesn’t fly often enough to earn elite status, my Delta SkyMiles Gold Amex still gives me elite-like perks to help upgrade my travel experience.” — Madison Blancaflor, senior content operations editor

If you are looking for a Delta card with more perks, the Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card offers similar benefits as the Delta Gold Amex but also comes with a higher welcome bonus, better earning rates and a domestic main cabin round-trip companion certificate each year at renewal.

The Platinum Card® from American Express

There is no travel card like the Amex Platinum with its slew of perks, statement credits and lounge access. You can use your Platinum card to earn 5 Amex Membership Rewards points per dollar spent on flights booked directly with airlines or through the Amex Travel portal (up to $500,000 in combined purchases each year). Delta is an Amex transfer partner, you can also redeem these points for your next Delta flight. And the card even offers Sky Club access when you’re traveling with Delta.

†Effective February 1, 2025, Platinum card members will receive 10 visits per years to the Delta Sky Club; to earn an unlimited number of visits each year starting February 1, 2025, the total eligible purchases on the card must equal $75,000 or more between January 1, 2024 and December 31, 2024, and each calendar year thereafter. Once all 10 visits have been used, eligible card members may purchase additional Delta Sky Club visits (including Grab and Go) at a per-visit rate of $50 per person using the card.

Frequent flyers who are loyal to Delta but want added flexibility for their rewards will love the Amex Platinum with its ability to earn transferable points and enjoy luxury travel perks.

“As a frequent traveler, the Platinum Card's extensive lounge access makes the card a must-have on the road. I can access Delta Sky Clubs, Centurion Lounges, Plaza Premium, Priority Pass lounges and others. More often than not, this means I have a place to relax before my flight. This has saved me thousands of dollars in airport food over the years and keeps me productive at the airport. On top of this, the up to $200 airline fee credit and up to $200 Uber Cash offset most of the card's high annual fee.” — Andrew Kunesh, former senior editor

Frequent flyers who are still looking for a premium travel card but can’t justify the Platinum’s high annual fee should consider the Chase Sapphire Reserve®. Although the Reserve does not come with as many perks and benefits, it does offer a more flexible travel credit with a slightly lower annual fee of $550.

Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card

The Delta SkyMiles Platinum Amex is a good option for a more frequent Delta flyer. It comes standard with Delta card perks like priority boarding and a free checked bag for you and eight companions when flying Delta. However, the card also features premium benefits such as a Global Entry/TSA PreCheck fee credit and an annual companion certificate (issued upon account renewal) which allows cardmembers to bring a friend or family member along on a round-trip Delta flight in the continental U.S.

Frequent Delta flyers and/or those seeking to earn Delta Medallion status would benefit from the premium perks offered by the Delta SkyMiles Platinum Amex.

“I keep it in my wallet for the annual companion pass. My family and I do a lot of domestic flying and often plan our vacations far in advance. Having the companion ticket can save my family hundreds of dollars a year in airfare. Plus, the tickets even qualify for free elite upgrades.” — Scott Mayerowitz, former executive editor

If you are a Delta loyalist who wants more Delta perks, including Delta Sky Club access, the Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card may be a better option for your wallet.

Effective 2/1/25, Reserve Card Members will receive 15 Visits per year to the Delta Sky Club; to earn an unlimited number of Visits each year starting on 2/1/25, the total eligible purchases on the Card must equal $75,000 or more between 1/1/24 and 12/31/24, and each calendar year thereafter.

The Delta SkyMiles Reserve Amex is the perfect fit for a Delta loyalist thanks to its plethora of travel benefits and perks. The Reserve Amex comes with standard premium perks like priority boarding, free checked bags for cardmembers and eight companions and TSA PreCheck/Global Entry credit. It is also the only Delta cobranded card that allows for Delta Sky Club access. Meanwhile, the Delta Reserve Amex’s annual companion certificate (issued upon account renewal) allows cardmembers to bring a companion on a domestic round-trip flight, including Comfort+ and first class, while only paying the taxes and fees of the accompanying person’s ticket.

While the Delta SkyMiles Reserve Amex comes with plenty of benefits and perks, it should only be considered by Delta loyalists as it also comes with an elite-level annual fee of $650 (see rates and fees).

“As a Delta Diamond Medallion, I spend a lot of time on Delta jets. The Delta Reserve card helps me maintain my status by offering shortcuts to earning (and retaining) status. Plus, the card's annual companion ticket is valid on first-class itineraries and has helped me offset the card's annual fee multiple years in a row.” — Andrew Kunesh, former points and miles editor

If you are a frequent flyer but not looking to be an airline loyalist, consider The Platinum Card® from American Express, which offers 5 Amex Membership Rewards points per dollar on airfare purchased directly with the airlines or with Amex Travel (up to $500,000 in purchases a year), essentially a 10% return based on TPG’s valuations. Membership Rewards points are transferable, so if you are redeeming for a Delta flight, you can transfer them to Delta SkyMiles at a 1:1 ratio. Additionally, the Amex Platinum includes Delta Sky Club access when traveling on Delta as part of the Amex Global Lounge Collection.

If you are looking for a similarly priced business card that is more flexible in terms of redemptions but still offers high rewards rates on travel purchases, consider the Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card. Chase Ultimate Rewards points are transferable, so you don’t have to commit to one airline when it comes time to redeem your points.

Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Business American Express Card

The Delta SkyMiles Platinum Business Amex is a good option for a mid-tier business card. Like all Delta cards, it comes with perks like priority boarding and a free checked bag for you and eight companions when flying Delta. The card also earns 3 miles per dollar on all eligible purchases with Delta and hotels, offers a Global Entry/TSA PreCheck fee credit and multiple Delta Medallion elite status boosters. The card’s most notable perk is the annual companion certificate that allows cardmembers to bring another person on a round-trip Delta flight for only the taxes and fees associated with the ticket.

Small-business owners that frequently travel with Delta and want to earn Delta Medallion elite status can benefit from having the SkyMiles Platinum Business Amex.

“This card often offers a high welcome bonus, which I maximize by using for domestic flights in Comfort+ and first class when cash prices are high. Getting an automatic 15% discount on award redemptions just by holding this card is a major perk for me and makes my SkyMiles go further. Given I don’t have Delta elite status, I enjoy getting a free checked bag and priority boarding when flying on the airline.” — Matt Moffitt, senior credit cards editor

If your small business wants a mid-tier travel card with flexible earnings, the American Express® Business Gold Card can be a great fit. The card earns 4 Membership Rewards points per dollar on the two categories where your business spends the most each month, and these points can be transferred to Delta SkyMiles if you find yourself needing a Delta flight.

American Express® Gold Card

The Amex Gold card may be the perfect mid-tier card for Delta travelers looking to maximize rewards on everyday spending while enjoying value-added perks. With its monthly Uber and dining credits, you can cover almost all of the card’s $250 annual fee. In addition, all points earned are transferable to Amex’s travel partners — which includes Delta SkyMiles.

Traveling foodies who are looking for a card that combines both travel and dining would find a lot of use for the Amex Gold card with its multiple bonus earning categories.

“There's no better card for groceries and dining than the Amex Gold. The card offers the most benefits, the highest welcome offer and the best earning rates out of all the business cards — though it does carry a $650 annual fee.

The Delta SkyMiles Reserve Business card is a great card for frequent Delta travelers looking to experience all the luxury Delta has to offer.

“The Delta SkyMiles Reserve Business Amex helped me attain airline status without actually having status. As a newbie Delta flyer, I wanted to have a credit card that will make my overall travel experience better. Having access to the Delta Sky Club and Centurion Lounges when flying Delta were massive perks. Earning triple miles when making Delta purchases, an annual companion pass and a 15% discount when using my SkyMiles to book travel make the high annual fee worth it.” — Hannah Streck, senior SEO manager

If you’re a business looking for a premium travel card with lounge access and more flexible rewards, there is no better option than The Business Platinum Card® from American Express. You’ll have access to not only Delta lounges but also Amex Centurion Lounges, Priority Pass lounges and Plaza Premium locations. You can also travel in style with automatic Gold status at Marriott and Hilton hotels and an array of other statement credits and perks for your small business. And you can transfer Membership Rewards points directly to your Delta SkyMiles account. Enrollment is required for select benefits.

Maximizing Delta credit cards

Earn the welcome offer

Taking advantage of a lucrative welcome offer is a great way to maximize your rewards later on; once you bank a welcome offer, keep accruing points or miles you can eventually redeem for things like upgraded flights and hotel rooms.

Join the airline's loyalty program

The Delta SkyMiles loyalty program is free to join and offers perks such as miles that don't expire. If you're a cobranded Delta cardholder and a SkyMiles member, you can also enjoy decent earning rates in specific categories — like flight bookings — in addition to earning rewards on everyday purchases.

Book directly with the airline

Typically, Delta will work with you to resolve any issues that might come up after you've booked a flight with them. If you book directly with the airline, you also don't have to worry about being charged change or cancellation fees.

Plus, Delta will price-match flights if you find one at a lower cost than what you originally paid. However, it's worth noting that the price match comes in the form of an airline credit you can use toward future travel and not a refund to your original form of payment.

Book a Delta flash sale

Delta flash sales, otherwise known as SkyMiles Deals, are limited-time offers to book award flights at discounted rates. You can adjust your search for your city of origin and travel destination, making it a great way to save on trips you’re hoping to take. While these deals are unpredictable, you might be able to save a few thousand SkyMiles or even book for less than half the normal mileage. If you have more flexibility in location and time, these flash sales can be a great way to save on your next Delta flight.

Consider a flexible rewards card

Delta SkyMiles is the most popular currency for booking Delta award flights, but that doesn’t mean you should only focus on earning Delta miles. You may want to consider a more flexible rewards currency — particularly American Express Membership Rewards. That’s because you can transfer Amex points to Delta at a 1:1 ratio, but you can also transfer them to Virgin Atlantic (to book nonstop Delta flights, when available) or numerous other partners for non-Delta redemptions.

Earning Delta MQD's through spending

You can earn Delta MQDs (Medallion Qualification Dollars) by flying with Delta or on Delta-marketed flights and by booking Delta vacation packages. The earning rate in these categories is 1 MQD per $1 spent. You can also spend your way to status by earning MQDs every time you use your Delta card to make a purchase. For example, Delta SkyMiles Platinum and Platinum Business cardholders earn 1 MQD for every $20 spent, while Delta SkyMiles Reserve and Reserve Business cardholders earn 1 MQD for every $10 spent.

Book flights in advance

Delta uses dynamic award pricing, which means that tickets booked with Delta SkyMiles will follow cash prices. Booking a last-minute trip will likely require a huge outlay of miles — as it’s a reflection of the high cash price of the flight. As a result, it’s definitely worth planning ahead when using your Delta SkyMiles. Remember that award tickets are fully refundable, and if the mileage cost drops after booking, you can rebook and obtain a partial refund of miles.

What is Delta Air Lines?

Delta Air Lines is a major airline based in Atlanta, though it also has numerous hubs across the United States. It frequently ranks No. 1 in TPG’s annual report on the best airlines in the U.S., including the most recent iteration. Delta currently offers seven cobranded credit cards, many of which are featured on this list.

Delta offers four consumer credit cards and three business cards, meaning there's likely a good fit for you, whether you're a business owner or simply a Delta loyalist.

The four cobranded consumer Delta cards are:

And the three cobranded business Delta cards are:

Delta cards work just like any other cobranded airline card. There are different types of cards for both business owners and everyday consumers. Each card offers something different such as lounge access and lucrative earning rates when booking flights directly with Delta.

Delta credit card benefits

The best Delta credit cards come with many unique benefits. Some of them are specific to flying on Delta, whereas others apply to general travel purchases or even non-travel merchants. The key is to identify which perks matter the most to you.

Earning Delta SkyMiles

Cobranded Delta credit cards earn Delta SkyMiles when you charge purchases to the card. Most offer bonus miles on Delta purchases, but some offer category bonuses on other purchases — including hotels and dining. You can then redeem these SkyMiles in a variety of ways, including for Delta flights as well as flights on multiple airline partners.

Welcome-offer bonus miles

Delta cobranded cards typically offer large welcome bonuses when new cardmembers reach minimum spending requirements. They tend to vary across the year, but you can view the current offers in this article

Free checked baggage

The personal and business versions of the Delta Gold, Delta Platinum and Delta Reserve cards offer a free checked bag for the primary cardmember and up to eight companions traveling on the same reservation.

Companion certificates

The companion certificate is an annual perk offered upon card renewal for travelers with the personal or business versions of the Delta Platinum and Delta Reserve cards. If you hold the Delta Platinum Amex or Delta Platinum Business Amex, you’ll receive a companion certificate valid for a round-trip  flight in select main cabin fare classes — all you need to pay for is the ticket’s taxes and fees. Meanwhile, Reserve and Reserve Business cardholders enjoy a similar certificate, but it’s extended to include certain first-class tickets as well.

How to apply for a Delta credit card

If you're interested in applying for a cobranded Delta credit card, you've got options. You can apply online using any of these links:

Consumer Delta cards:

Business Delta cards:

You can also apply for a Delta card over the phone or by filling out a mail offer.

What credit score do you need to apply for a Delta card?

Your credit score should be 690 or higher to qualify for a Delta SkyMiles card. This doesn't mean that if your score is lower than 690 you'll automatically be denied for a Delta card; several factors related to your credit score also come into play each time you apply for a new credit card.

What are the benefits of having a Delta Air Lines credit card?

Delta cardholders get myriad benefits. These include perks like inflight discounts and free checked bags, although it's important to note that benefits vary based on what Delta card you have.

Delta SkyMiles loyalty program earning

You can earn SkyMiles on every trip you book with Delta. Depending on the card you hold, you can earn an unlimited number of SkyMiles that never expire. Each Delta card has its own earning structure:

  • Both the Delta SkyMiles Blue and SkyMiles Gold Amex cards earn 2 miles per dollar on Delta purchases
  • Both the Delta SkyMiles Platinum and the SkyMiles Reserve Amex cards earn 3 miles per dollar on Delta purchases

Additionally, Delta cardholders benefit from varying earning rates in categories including restaurants, supermarkets and hotel bookings.

What is the Delta SkyMiles program and how does it work?

Delta SkyMiles is a loyalty program that lets members earn miles on purchases made using their Delta credit cards in various categories — including the ones mentioned above.

What are MQMs?

Delta MQMs (Medallion Qualification Miles) are a unit of measurement that shows your level of progress when it comes to earning Medallion status with the airline. MQMs are a thing of the past, however, since Delta did away with them when it overhauled its SkyMiles program.

Airport lounge access

One Delta credit card provides access to Delta Sky Clubs (which are now more difficult to access because you can no longer purchase daypasses). This lends an air of exclusivity to Sky Clubs, which Delta SkyMiles Reserve cardholders — as well as those who have purchased annual Sky Club memberships — are privy to.

Priority boarding

If you have the SkyMiles Gold, SkyMiles Platinum or SkyMiles Reserve credit card, you're eligible for priority boarding on Delta flights.

Global Entry or TSA PreCheck application Credit

The SkyMiles Platinum, Platinum Business, Reserve and Reserve Business Amex cards offer Global Entry or TSA PreCheck application fee credits.

How to choose the best Delta credit card

Frequently asked questions

Choosing the best Delta card will depend on your personal (or business) spending habits. Delta offers three tier options for both its personal and business card products: Gold, Platinum and Reserve. There’s also the Delta SkyMiles® Blue American Express Card, a no-annual-fee card (see rates and fees) for those looking to earn Delta miles without an annual expense. However, even the most casual Delta traveler would likely benefit from a higher-end card.

The best card option for you will depend on whether you are looking for a business or personal credit card, along with how often you plan to fly with the airline. If you are a frequent Delta flyer or you are looking for a particular type of benefit, the premium card options may be better for you.

Delta offers a full lineup of cobranded credit cards with various annual fees. These credit cards come with a host of elitelike benefits — including perks like priority boarding, free checked bags and even airport lounge access. A Delta credit card that fits your spending habits can be well worth the annual fee and make a great addition to your wallet.

Only the two high-end cards — the Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card and the Delta SkyMiles® Reserve Business American Express Card will get you complimentary access to the Delta Sky Club when you have a same-day Delta-operated or Delta-marketed flight. Each cardholder is allowed two guests (or immediate family members) at $50 apiece, but both cards include four one-time guest passes each year that will provide complimentary access.

When you apply for a Delta credit card, you’ll include your SkyMiles number on the application page. This ensures that the miles you earn will post to your account, and it’ll also grant you any applicable perks when traveling on Delta-operated flights.

Once you’ve received your new Delta credit card in the mail, you’ll want to add it to your SkyMiles account as a payment method. Simply log in and navigate to your account page. Find the “My Wallet” section and then add the card as a stored payment method. You can also do this in the Delta app.

You can upgrade your Delta card, but you might not want to. Delta’s premium card options can seem alluring with their array of perks and big bonuses, but don’t jump the gun — even if you’re targeted for a one-time bonus for upgrading.

For starters, these upgrade offers are quite rare, and even when they appear, they’re almost always smaller than the welcome bonus of a new card application. In addition, thanks to Amex’s once-per-lifetime restriction on bonuses, upgrading to a higher-end Delta card may make you ineligible to earn the welcome bonus on the same card in the future.

Generally speaking, it is more beneficial to simply submit an application for the card you want.

Sky Priority is Delta’s premium airport service. The service is generally reserved for first-class and Delta One passengers, those with Gold Medallion (or higher) status and SkyTeam Elite Plus travelers. Unfortunately, no Delta card will grant you full Sky Priority benefits. However, most Delta cards will offer you priority boarding, and the higher-end cards include an elite status booster based on spending that can help you reach Gold Medallion, which in turn will give you Sky Priority.

Some Delta cards include coverage to help when things go wrong on a trip booked with the card, though a number of restrictions apply. You can view our guide to travel protections with American Express for complete details.

Yes, you can add your Delta credit card to your mobile wallet of choice. The process is pretty straightforward — usually, you can manually type in your card credentials or take a photo of your card to load it into a mobile wallet.

In short, no, SkyMiles do not expire. However, per Delta, they reserve "the right to deactivate or close an account (and accordingly remove all miles in the account)" if they suspect fraudulent activity or if you request that your account be closed, for example.

Yes, it's possible to hold more than one Delta card at a time. However, you should keep in mind that you're not eligible to receive the welcome offer on a Delta card more than once.
