When it was announced that Cate Blanchett was going to star in the film adaptation of the video game “Borderlands,” some film fans were scratching their head in confusion. Of course, it wasn’t completely shocking, as she was reteaming with filmmaker Eli Roth, but it was difficult to imagine Blanchett taking on such a role. However, according to the actor, that’s exactly why she took it.

In a recent interview with Empire, Cate Blanchett talked about the reasons for her to join the upcoming film, “Borderlands.” For those who don’t play the game, “Borderlands” is about Lillith, a famous outlaw who returns to her home planet and joins up with a group of outcasts. Think of it sorta like “Guardians of the Galaxy” meets lots and lots of crazy guns. Not exactly your typical Cate Blanchett vehicle, so to speak.

“The crazy asks are usually the things I gravitate towards; the things I could never conceive of,” Blanchett explained. “I think there also may have been a little COVID madness — I was spending a lot of time in the garden, using the chainsaw a little too freely. My husband said, ‘This film could save your life.’”

So, what happens when you mix a little COVID madness and a wild role is that you are able to then land someone like Cate Blanchett. It’ll be interesting to see how she fares in “Borderlands,” but you have to assume she is going to be one of the highlights.

“Borderlands” itself is a bit of an interesting film already because of the behind-the-scenes drama. The film is said to have had major reshoots where Roth wasn’t actually directing. Instead, Tim Miller was brought in to handle them. So, it’ll be interesting to watch the film to see if you can piece together who did what.

“Borderlands” is set to arrive in theaters on August 9.
