We’re calling it: this engagement season, pear cuts are the new ovals.

Before Hailey Bieber made the oval diamond the choice of many a modern bride, that stone shape was not a common choice for wedding bling. Ovals were regarded as a fancy gem cut perfect for someone looking for a dazzling ring that was truly out of the ordinary.

Just like round-cut diamonds, ovals are brilliant and beautiful, but since their popularity has spiked in the past few years, they are also now very mainstream. If it’s a beyond-the-norm engagement ring you covet, pear cuts are where it’s at—they are the most interesting, unique and dazzling gems of the moment.

“The pear is actually a combination of a marquise cut stone and round brilliant, which is what makes them so unique,” says Chau Lui, co-owner of Paris Jewellers. The Canadian-Vietnamese sister-owned company has created engagement rings for celebrities including Lana Condor, Kaitlyn Bristowe and Hayley Erbert, fiancée of Derek Hough. “The elongated shape makes pear diamonds appear larger per carat than any other diamond shape, and they also have incredible sparkle and fire. The distinctive cut also looks stunning in a variety of settings, making it a perfect choice if you want to really personalize your engagement ring style.”

There are a few famous pear cut engagement rings Lui loves, that beautifully illustrate the specialness of the shape. The most famous one is the Taylor-Burton diamond, the name given to the enormous 69-carat pear shaped diamond given to Taylor by two-time husband Richard Burton in 1969. Though it was originally set as a ring, Taylor had the pear cut diamond restyled into a necklace when the immense stone proved too heavy to wear on her finger. More pear cut engagement ring fans include Victoria Beckham, Margot Robbie, Megan Fox, Scarlett Johansson and Sophie Turner.

Though Lui says pear cut stones look beautiful in a range of settings, the most popular ones of the moment feature the choice stone set on a simple pavé band. “If you love sparkle, a hidden halo is an excellent addition to your setting,” says Lui. “It will keep the focus on the gemstone and give extra dazzle. Pair your pear with a slim diamond pavé wedding band or get creative and explore a band with a little curvature to it. Because of a pear shape engagement ring’s rounded bottom, I love pairing it with a contoured wedding band to create a crown-like effect.”
