Jennifer Lopez CFDA Fashion Icon Award

J.Lo Paid Tribute to the Bronx (and Her Abs) Last Night

The mega idol showed her Jenny from the Block side in her CFDA speech

The fact that Jennifer Lopez is a bona fide style legend is now official. Last night, the singer and actress was honoured by the CFDA and awarded this year’s trophy for Fashion Icon. Lopez joins an elite club of past winners, including Rihanna, Lady Gaga and Kate Moss.

To accept her award, the star arrived at the Brooklyn Museum in a coral-orange crop top and matching full skirt. The look was designed by Ralph Lauren—who, like Lopez, hails from the Bronx. The outfit was a nod to many of J.Lo’s style personas. The sequinned top hearkened back to her onstage costumes, while the skirt’s elasticated drawstring was a subtle hint to the singer’s Juicy Couture sweat suit in her music video for “I’m Real” circa 2001. Best of all, the outfit was basically a frame for the star’s downright jaw-dropping abs.

As Lopez accepted the award from designer Tom Ford, she joked that her fiancée, Alex Rodriguez, “can’t live without him.” She then launched into a touching, and at times laugh-out-loud, speech. First, she spoke about growing up in 1980s Bronx. “As a girl I didn’t have a lot of clothes, but I would cut up my sweatshirts and jeans and make miniskirts out of them and I’d try to be like my idols—Madonna, Cyndi Lauper. I was also influenced by the people in my neighbourhood and the explosion of hip hop at that time.” Lopez went on to dedicate the award to her long-time beauty heroes, the late Oribe and Kevyn Aucoin. “[They] helped turn me from an around-the-way girl to a girl who could grace a magazine cover.”

Finally, Lopez thanked her stylists, Rob Zangardi and Mariel Haenn, and her family. “You make me feel like the most beautiful person in the world just for being loved.” Pretty humble for an icon, no?
