Inland 2022 Canadian fashion Lo'bat Accessories

These Seven Canadian Fashion Brands Are a Revelation

Look sharp, shop local

At The Kit, we pride ourselves on keeping up with our Canadian designers. That’s why we’re major champions of Inland, Sarah Power’s game-changing online shopping community that roared back to life in person in a big way this past May. Happily, you can shop the thrilling talent on display anytime on the site, including Kit favourites like Eliza Faulkner (with her delightful dresses) and Okayok (with its superlative tees). It’s also a great place to discover buzzy new designers.

Here are seven newish-to-us Canadian brands we’re particularly excited about this year.

Anne Dahl jewelry

For unique jewellery that feels heirloom: Anne Dahl

The Ottawa metalsmith is one of the most interesting jewellery designers in Canada. Dahl’s pieces are fluid, organic, sculptural. At $360, these handmade Feast earrings are on the higher end of her price scale, but you can score a stunning pair of gold hoops—also handmade—for $80.

Mindful Pigs Canadian fashion

For sustainable streetwear: Mindful Pigs

The Montreal streetwear brand is so fun, but it also has soul. This gender-neutral, organic terry sweatshirt ($325) and shorts combo is typical of the brand’s playfulness and activist spirit: Pegoh, the “defiant piggy” at the heart of Mindful Pigs is inspired by all voiceless creatures. A portion of all Mindful Pigs sales goes to animal rights organizations.

Partoem Inland Canadian fashion

For extremely elegant bags: Partoem

Partoem, a Montreal handbag line, is known for its clean lines and unique assembly: All Partoem pieces are crafted without stitches or glue and made from Italian vegetable-tanned leather. This Pico Oro wallet bag ($250) is a tiny slice of heaven. Dog lovers will adore the brand’s leashes and multi-coloured collars.

Kate Austin Canadian fashion

For your entire summer wardrobe: Kate Austin

We’re entering peak Kate Austin season: the Toronto designer is known for her easy, breezy “one-size-fits-many” pieces, crafted from fair trade, organic cotton, linen and silk. Think shirt dresses, maxi dresses and jackets—like this impossibly soft Toni Duster ($155)—that look equally at home at the brunch table as they do reclining languidly on the garden settee.

Lo'bat Accessories

For statement earrings you’ll keep forever: Lo’bat Accessories

This photo is more vibe than earring pic, but what a vibe. (Here’s a detail shot of the pictured Nazartaaj earrings, $95.) Lo’bat is the brainchild of Golnar Ahmadian and Hediyeh Maadi Tehrani, friends who infuse their brand with their Persian heritage and creative spirit. Every one of their pieces is a wearable work of art.

Bouquet Canadian accessories fashion

For conversation-starting bags: Bouquet

How’s this for a fresh take on a market bag? (Those are glass fruit danglers—so fun.) The Kiwi Fishnet Bag ($280) is on the wilder side of offerings from Montreal’s Bouquet, which also sells handmade leather wallets, totes and buttery bucket bags that would look at home slung over the shoulder of Jeanne Dumas.

Heirloom Hats

For head-turning headpieces: Heirloom Hats

Meet the Swirl in melon ($280), one of dozens of thoughtfully created hats from the cult favourite millinery company. The hats are made in a Montreal atelier by designer Samantha-Tara Mainville, and include berets, fedoras and hats of the cowboy and bucket variety. Beyond chic, all of them.
