the three biggest hat trends of the season

Need a Spring Hat? These Are the Three Styles to Sport This Season

From designer baseball caps to the joy-giving bucket hat

If there’s one spring accessory you can rely on for minimal effort but maximum impact, it’s a hat. It can take an outfit in an entirely unexpected direction, as well as offering sun protection, bad hair day cover and celebrity-disguise vibes.

But not just any hat. Right now, there are three very specific styles on heavy rotation in the street style and fashion content worlds: the baseball cap, the bucket hat and the cowboy hat. Thanks to all the fashion houses—Chanel, Celine, Jacquemus to name a few—launching their own versions of these three classic styles, there are now a gajillion more options to choose from, which means you’re bound to find a style you’ll love—even if you’re not a hat person. Here are some of the best.

Baseball Caps

Given that sportswear is one of the biggest trends on the Spring 2022 runway, it is no surprise that baseball caps are top of this list. While ball caps are certainly not a new accessory, lately a league’s worth of brands have been releasing elevated versions of them with luxe logos or mottos stamped on the front. Whether you go designer or sporty, throwing on a cap is the easiest way to make any outfit look cool and effortless in seconds.

A very cute reminder to those who walk by (or yourself in the mirror) to check in with the number one woman in your life.

The designer logo baseball cap that launched a wave of designer logo baseball caps. (They make a bucket hat, too.) Since making its debut in the Celine Spring 2021 collection in Monaco, this has been the hat to cop, thanks to the minimalist design and, let’s be honest, the value of this logo. True story: I tried to get my hands on one during Paris Fashion Week and the whole city was completely sold out of it. If you want one, run.

Bucket Hats

Our affair with the ’90s bucket hat is here to stay. The 360º brimmed style has become the hat of choice all year round with brands offering fluffy winter and canvas summer-ready styles. This season, they’re bolder than ever in bright colours and fun prints. If you don’t already own one, know that adding a bucket hat to your wardrobe will inject a dose of irreverent joy into every spring outfit.

No other print screams summer like tie dye. Channel those nostalgic summer camp vibes with this canary-yellow reverse dye Adidas bucket hat. Pair it with a rainbow beaded necklace, ribbed tank, denim shorts and sandals to complete that I-don’t-feel-like-being-an-adult-this-weekend look.

If you’re wondering why bucket hats are absolutely everywhere this season, you can thank Jacquemus’ latest collection. Style stars like Chriselle Lim and Hailey Bieber (who literally has one in every colour) have been showing off how they’re wearing it as of late, and it’s getting everyone wondering if they, too, should pull the trigger. The answer? Probably. With the just-prominent-enough logo and self-tie drawstring at the back, this hat is ready for every summer activity on your agenda.

We love a versatile accessory, and this Lululemon reversible bucket hat checks that box. It’s available in six colourways, and six more if you turn them inside out—the underside of this one is a grey camo. Made of recycled polyester fabric, it’s sweat-wicking and quick-drying, which means it’s built to protect your head (and hair!) from all types of unpredictable spring/summer weather.

Cowboy Hats

Before you think cowboy hats are only acceptable at Coachella, think again. This niche style has been making a comeback since Lil Nas X’s country-inspired 2019 hit “Old Town Road” and it’s been skyrocketing since with models and celebs donning the style. Although it’s true that a Western-inspired hat is the ideal accessory for music festival go-ers, a simple version also makes for an unexpected and bold addition to floral dresses, matching sets or a basic white T.

Since its debut on the Gucci Love Parade runway in Hollywood, a crop of celebs have been spotted in this It hat, including Lady Gaga, Elle Fanning and Jared Leto. The bubblegum pink adds a pop of colour to a neutral look, but if you want to push sartorial boundaries this season, go head-to-toe monochromatic.
