Come Inside Mackenzie Yeates’s Super Sunny Loft

A joyful home tour with the Kotn creative director

Now that we’re all inside all the time, making home a happy place to be is more important than ever. In this week’s Happy Space series, stylish Canadians invite us inside the room where they feel coziest, safest, and most, well, at home.

Mackenzie Yeates knows quality. As the co-founder and creative director of Kotn clothing, her focus is on sourcing the very best Egyptian cotton to craft the brand’s impossibly soft T-shirts, pants and sweatshirts. (Kotn’s current Lounge collection is made for these times.) Quality is what matters at home, too, in the two-storey Toronto loft Yeates shares with her husband, Ben (also a Kotn co-founder), and their adorable dog, Dash. Every piece is carefully chosen, from the prints above the bed to the books on the reworked dresser, a rescue from Ben’s parents’ garage.

Yeates says the airy bedroom is her favourite space, citing the light and the high ceilings. “Our space is basically just two big rooms with no doors. The light upstairs is amazing around 4 or 5 o’clock when it starts pouring through our shutters. I was rarely at home during that time of day before, and it’s a simple pleasure of being inside all the time.” Yeates is coping well with self-isolation, she says, but, “I miss spontaneity. Meeting up with friends for a weeknight drink, dropping by my parents’ house or walking the dog over to one of our favourite coffee shops—Te Aro or Merchants of Green Coffee—in the morning.”

Favourite part of your favourite room

“Our king-sized bed acts as a movie theatre/office/Zoom zone for me, Ben and our dog Dash. We have a projector that we pull out and put on the bench at the bottom of our bed and it projects onto the wall opposite at around 150 inches. I love watching old movies on it at night.”

Tell us about those prints

“The nude was by Ralph Gibson (one of my idols) from a project I did when I was in New York where I got to work with him. The columns were shot by my dad (another idol) on a trip to Egypt.”

On your bedside table

“I usually have about three water glasses on my side table. I also have two pairs of glasses for movie night, a notebook for when I can’t sleep and need to write down thoughts, my Kindle and my five-minute journal.”

Your WFH space

“This is the desk where I have been working every day. It makes all the difference to have a designated workspace during the week.”

Creating a mood

“It’s so nice to take time to just listen to music on a record player sometimes. It’s one of the small pleasures I’ve come to enjoy during this time.”

Best self-iso decor tip

“I like having all my coffee table books in my room instead of on an actual coffee table. I’ve pulled a few favourites out and stacked them on my dresser to make a little library area. It’s nice to have them more accessible right now and I’m taking time to go through them all again and feel inspired.”
