We Only Have Eyes For These 4 Shoe Trends This Spring

From Mary Janes with a twist to the comeback of retro sneakers

What a time to be a shoe lover. Time, that is, to store those much-worn boots at the back of the closet and show off ankles and pedicured toes in great Spring 2023 shoes. We’ve been taking notes from fashion week (both on and off the runways) to see what shoe styles designers and street style darlings have been partial to. The report? It’s all about effortlessly elegant ballet flats and Mary Janes with a twist, plus the comeback of retro sneakers.

Scroll down to scope out the four biggest spring 2023 shoe trends.

The ballet flats

After a few boots-exclusive months, we’re ready to plié and jété into the new season in the array of dance-ready slippers on the market. For those who routinely pack a pair of flats in their bag for the subway (it’s nothing to be ashamed of, despite what Tom from Succession says), ballet slippers are ideal, but this season there’s no need to hide them in your ludicrously capacious bag: show them off! Case in point: Tory Burch and Sandy Liang launched now sold-out ballet flats on their runways—an edgy studded one for the former and a pointe toe-inspired style for the latter. With #balletcore still going strong, there are an abundance of styles, textures and colours to choose from.

The peep-toe mules

Sun’s out, pedicured toes out. The ’90s fave peep-toe mules are making a play for our spring wardrobe. Tod’s and Proenza Schouler showed polished versions with everything from easy-breezy knitted skirts to leather trench coats. Look for a timeless block heel silhouette for a supportive and comfortable fit, and fun details like a pop of colour, sculptural heel shape or a textured finish.

The retro sneakers

Sneakers are not unusual to see at fashion week anymore (#normcore), but no-fuss sneaker styles from beloved athletic brands have been making a comeback. Gucci jumped on the wave and collaborated with Adidas to launch a Gucci-fied Gazelle, which has been seen on the likes of Kaia Gerber and Austin Butler. But you don’t need to go designer: Sambas, Air Forces, Club Cs and Chuck 70s are classics that have withstood the comings and goings of trendy and luxury designer sneakers.

The Mary Janes

If you’re suddenly seeing Mary Jane shoes everywhere, you’re not alone. The nostalgic style is in fact *everywhere* (thanks, Prada and Versace) and it’s the perfect update piece for a spring wardrobe. While the customary one-strap, buckled Mary Janes have a youthful air, the spring 2023 versions have a grown-up feel with skinnier multi-straps and dainty buckles. There are plenty of variations on offer, from a silver ’70s-inspired platform to a sleek slipper silhouette.
