Shuffle over, tomato girl: There’s another style icon gliding in with a baseball cap, poplin shirt and wide leg pants as we head into the tail end of summer. Everyone, meet Crisp Poplin Boy.

Before you go Google this trend, full disclosure: it’s something we at The Kit came up with after seeing the casual, borrowed-from-the-boys look surface on more than a few celebs (Taylor Swift, Kendall Jenner, Hailey Bieber–to name a few) in the past few weeks. But the one who’s living rent free in our minds? It’s none other than Jennifer Lawrence.

Ever since Lawrence came back into the limelight this summer to promote her latest rom-com film, No Hard Feelings, her red carpet style has taken over social feeds, reminding us how much we’ve missed seeing it. But it’s her off-duty outfits in particular that have been stirring up our chat threads.

This does qualify as a “quiet luxury” look, since its composed of subtle, low-key designer items. And in this case, Lawrence is indeed shooting a Dior commercial. But for the A-list actress’s other non-work-related outfits, there’s a youthful handsomeness to her style, which speaks more to the blanketed term.

What exactly is crisp poplin boy style? It’s laissez-faire wardrobe choices that feel unintentional, like the wearer just threw on basic pieces and walked out the door. It’s not as prim and proper as the academia look where one looks as if they’ve just left prep school and are heading to the country club to play a game of tennis or cricket.

The crisp poplin boy picked up their cotton school shirt, threw it on and added a baseball cap to block the sun (or the paparazzi flashes). But because they remembered they’re going to see their family later, they brought a sweater and put on a pair of sensible flats so they look like they put in a little effort. Glossy, ultralong hair helps.

So why does this nonchalant style provide so much outfit inspiration? Because this look is all about finding new life in basics, and that’s the beauty of it. Every piece of clothing Lawrence is wearing is something you probably already own or can easily attain at a fraction of the price; it’s just about how you put them together. If you want to stock up, look for well-made pieces in crisp-looking materials. These are items you’ll wear time after time, through late summer and layered well into fall.

What is a crisp poplin boy without a poplin shirt? Look for one with a relaxed fit or go up a size for that relaxed, nonchalant effect. When it comes time to look business appropriate, you can just button it up and tuck it into your go-to dress pants (see below).

Since nothing about this style is supposed to be form-fitting, look for a boxy silhouette when it comes to a white T-shirt like J-Law. The slightly cropped design makes more of a statement than your typical basic tee.

If you still haven’t jumped on these pants yet, what are you waiting for? These $60 wide leg pants, ideal for layering with more casual pieces like a tee and sneakers, are a fashion godsend for those who don’t want to sacrifice comfort when it comes to dress pants. They’re available in a range of fall-ready colours, including beige, black and olive.

In case you need another reminder, Lawrence proves the gender-neutral trench is timeless, practical and instantly makes you look put together, no matter what you’re wearing underneath. And it can be worn with pretty much everything (a refresher here).

This sweater is not for you to layer on over your shirt or tee, but drape elegantly over your shoulders. (But if you must, slip it on when the temperature drops.) While a solid coloured sweater works, a stripe breaks up the look and adds some contrast.

The ballet flats

While a crisp poplin boy could accessorize the look with a pair of trusted sneakers, activate the “wrong shoe theory” and swap runners for a pair of ballet flats to refine the outfit without compromising on comfort and chicness.
