Designer Hilary MacMillan Shares Her All-Canadian Summer Shopping List

Including her favourite piece from her just-launched swim collection

Hilary MacMillan isn’t one to rest on her laurels. The beloved Toronto designer recently launched home decor—including the leopard-print coaster set you didn’t know you needed—and now, just in time for the joyful summer weather, MacMillan introduces swimwear. The swim collection is vintage Hilary MacMillan: a mix of splashy patterns and chic overall colour in her signature size-inclusive range.

To celebrate, we asked MacMillan to share her favourite piece from the swim collection, and her current Canadian fashion, beauty and lifestyle obsessions. As you might expect, it’s a pretty great list.

Hilary MacMillan, beloved Canadian designer, has just launched swimwear.

But first: Now that cocktail season is ramping up, we had to know MacMillan summer patio pick. Her go-to spot? Goods & Provisions in Leslieville. “I moved here four years ago, and now I’m a die hard east-ender,” says the designer. “I don’t leave the East End bubble much and so I’ve tried most of the restaurants, breweries and bars in the neighbourhood. Goods & Provisions has a dark moody speakeasy vibe—it’s intimate with great food and wine.”

Sounds like the perfect place to toast another successful launch.

Six Realms’ architectural handbags

“Six Realms is a very interesting accessories company that launched in 2019. They’re producing really interesting handbags by mixing metals and soft materials to create these really stunning architectural accessories. They’re also very committed to using eco-friendly materials in all their products. I love a company that puts design and sustainability at their forefront of their brand. I’m really excited to get one of their bags!”

Kotn’s cozy sheets

“I finally upgraded to a king-size bed—big day!—and I had to buy all new sheets, comforter, etc. I wanted to buy from a Canadian company and had heard great things about Kotn. I ordered one set of sheets to test out and I fell in love. I now exclusively use their sheet set and duvet cover. They have the dreamiest bed products.”

Wildwood’s mellow-making tinctures

“I love finding and trying new herbal remedies, tinctures, serums etc. When I discovered Wildwood, I just loved it immediately. It’s a grassroots apothecary and herb craft studio creating small-batch, healing care potions, infused with magic in the heart of Wellington County in Ontario. Whenever I’m going through periods of stress and anxiety, I take my St. John’s Wort Midsummer Moon Flower Tincture and it mellows me out. It is as they describe it: “Bright plant medicine for dark or cloudy days.” It’s limited and seasonal, so get it when it’s available. I keep it in my vitamin cupboard for times when I need it.”

Briony Douglas’s poppy prints

“Probably my favourite style of art is modern art: I like bright colours, images with misplaced objects, pop culture references, and things that lean a bit surreal. Briony Douglas is a visual artist, photographer, director and illustrator who has a very unique point of view. She blends surrealism and pop culture to create epic installations and works of art, and she also sells her prints. Her super colourful “Helen” print hangs in my house as part of a gallery wall of sorts. It’s the only yellow piece in that space and I love how eye-catching it is.”

Red Sky Candles’ beautiful beeswax

“On the weekends, I love dragging my friends to different markets I find. Recently, I went to ANDPVA’s Indigenous Art Market and fell in love with Red Sky Candles. This family-run business creates the most amazing candles out of beeswax. I bought some for my home, but I have yet to light them because I don’t want to ruin this literal piece of art.”

Irresistibly Minimal’s elegant stacking rings

“I’m always on the hunt for rings. About five years ago, I had carpal tunnel surgery on both my hands and, since those surgeries, my hands and fingers have swollen and none of my rings fit anymore. It’s been quite frustrating because I love wearing rings, but finding anything above a size 9/10 has been impossible. So I’m constantly searching for rings that are trendy and not crazy expensive, or custom. Randomly, I stumbled across Joe Han Lee of Irresistibly Minimal on Etsy—he’s from Toronto and he makes rings up to size 15. I bought a whole bunch of his stacking rings and I love them.”

Shoppe Clover’s chic vintage furniture

“Since the pandemic, I’ve been obsessed with my home and making it feel uniquely me. I love mixing vintage pieces into my space and, when I found Shoppe Clover, it became my new obsession. I just bought a black/white/green marble dining room table from them and I stalk their bi-monthly Instagram drops for new finds that’ll fit my home.”

Hilary MacMillan swim!

“I’m so excited we are launching swim this year! It’s been something I’ve wanted to do for years and I’m happy it’s finally here. Whenever I pictured swim, I always imagined it as very colourful and fun with interesting silhouettes and shapes—I believe that is what we’ve accomplished. One of my favourite pieces is our Cocktail Print One Piece with cut-outs—the way we positioned all the cut-outs is sexy and flattering for so many different body shapes.”
